hey guys, I'm sam, I'm from brisbane australia, i recently scored myself a 56 272 y block, needs to be rebuilt. the problem is I've never rebuilt an engine and really don't know anything about things like what cam to use and all that.

i know i'd like to run like a 3x2 intake, and ill be running a C4 behind it, its going into a 1930 model A that ill be building.

are there any books out there on rebuilding them so that i can get my head around it? or what advice do you guys have?

If you have never built an engine before I would suggest you work with someone who knows their stuff. There are many things that come down to feel and experience, and the Y-block has expensive or difficult parts to replace if you stuff it up.

Maybe get involved with a car club that leans towards 50's fords.

Hi Mate.

The Y block is a great little engine, yet after market parts are far and few between.

Are you planning on performance or style?

If your careful they bore and stroke above 300cu
Pistons for a 292 are cheaper than 272. My block is a 272 bored out to 292 and .030 up.
Do you know what heads are on it? I guess you could say the Y Block was the stepping stone from the Flat head to the Windsor.
And there not the best breather but if you are working towards triples then revs. won't be a problem as tests show they are the better of low down power.
There are several casting no. and locations which will guide you. A good place to start with identifying your Y Block is
John Mummerts web site. He is also a member of this site.
His site at the bottom of the home page offers Technical information, Casting id. etc
Oh you have to click on the pictures to open the next page.

Ted Eaton is another knowledgeable guy which you'll find has done a lot of testing and posted it for us to lean upon when building a Y block.
These two guys are the ones you might find a book written buy.

All the best.

Howdy Sam, and welcome...

This book is due out next month, available from Amazon

there is also this book that has been out for several years, but the reprinted images are not very clear

here is a link to the Amazon listings

Triple carbs look cool, but you will get better performance from a single 4 barrel, especially on one of John Mummerts alloy manifolds.

These are a heavy engine, but built Ford tough, and they make good horsepower and heaps of torque with regular hop up work.

And an exhaust note like no other !

Cheers, Al.

thanks for the info so far guys

im a fitter and turner by trade so I'm sure i could get my head around rebuilding an engine if there was a book to follow, i also have a few mates who have done rebuilds on various engines so i can ask them things if i get stuck, even ask on here for guidance

i was always taught the best was to learn is to jump in the deep end haha plus its the best way to gain experience

i guess I'm going for more of a style over performance build (depending on how bad the engine is... pick it up tomorrow) i could look at boring to 292 and go from there i guess, I've seen john mummerts page and am interested in possibly a pair of his heads (again depending on what actual parts are on mine and the direction i choose to go haha) and also his C4 bellhousing

There is a very active member on this site named Lon that lives near Brisbane. I'm sure he would be a good contact. Chuck

yeah I've seen that buildup! that thing is freakin sweet! i hope my coupe turns out half as cool! plans are chopped, channeled, cycle guards, 272 bored to 292, probably just a 4brl carb seeing as i found today i have the ECZ 9425-B intake also ECZ-G heads, it seems to have a mixture of ECG and EAN rocker arm though, yet to thoroughly check, also haven't split it open to see what rods are in it!
picking up another 272 this weekend incase i need parts or whatever, for $250 i couldn't say no

Picking up another one already? You have been bitten by the infamous Y Block Bug! There is no cure for the Y Block disease, no other brand immunizations can get you away from it. Welcome to the rest of us who have been diseased by the Y Block bug, there is no sweeter sounding disease on earth!
As Chuck states, get a hold of Lon Argent, he will steer you in the right direction for local sorces and he is/was in Brisbane but he recently moved but I don't think far away, somewhere still in the Brisbane area.

sweet thanks! ill be sure to try to get hold of him! as for a disease... i don't think I've caught it yet haha! neither engines are running, but I've bought the second engine cause i have a feeling the first one may have already been rebuilt with different parts and i think its frozen up, but i won't have another chance to work on them for another few weeks as i head back to work tomorrow (19/9 roster... 800km from home)
