Engine Code?

I got an e-mail the other day asking if I knew what an engine date code of 2-72FD means. This is on a 1957 Ford 292 motor. Obviously, if I knew, I would have answered the question! But alas, I am just the village idiot Smile So if any of you guys out there have a clue to this one, I'd sure appreciate the response.

The person that contacted me was one of the editors from Legendary Ford Magazine, John Rotella. I think that he was trying to find the info for someone that was outside the USA. I will have to look at the cc in the e-mail tonight when I get home.

Shaw's only a contributor, but you're right, he seems to have a bias against Y Blocks. The editor, on the other hand, Colin Date, likes them, and us. He's going to print Bob Martin's article on EXPO, and one I wrote on Pure stock racing in an upcoming issue. I think May.

Jim. Can you have the person asking the question get on-line?.  I’m assuming He’s referring to the stamped number that’s usually found at the front of the engine on the valley pan rail.  If it’s a different number than this, then it may be a different coding.  And has been mentioned, if it’s not a U.S. engine, then it’s potentially also a different coding.

First, as to the detractor of Legendary Ford Magazine, opinions are like backsides; everybody has one! Just bear in mind, that magazine gives the Y-Block community WAY more positive coverage than all of the other car rags combined. And Colin Date, the owner and publishjer is the reason for that.



Now to the subject at hand. I have contacted the guy in New Zealand that is trying to figure out his engine block code and have invited him to join us here on the forum so that we can pepper him with questions and hopefully help him figure out what he has. Look for him soon!

This thread is off track.  The site may belong to Jim but the forums belong to the members.  As such there are some unspoken rules and one of those is to first take up any issues with those that the issues are with rather than simply just arbitrarily posting them.  Opinions are one thing and flaming is another.  If there are problems with an editor or contributor of a magazine, then take up those issues with the magazine, not this forum.  And likewise, I’m a regular subscriber to LFM and like it.  And of course, that's just an opinion.

 

And I believe this thread was dealing with some block number I.D.’s so back to that.

The engines for Australia and New Zealand were Canadian engines.

I cannot figure out what 2-72D means yet. If he drops by and some more questions I think an answer can be found.



One thing I might guess is that the 2-72D means a vehicle model or series that the engine was installed (UTE?). If the 2-72D is cast in the block or a stamping could give more answers.
