Right now I have Type "F" in my Fordo.I am going to drop the pan and check for plugged filter as I am having trouble with no engagement in any gear when cold.Its fine once it warms up.Should I drain the Convertor and let everything drain for a couple of days and than refill with Dextron 2 which I believe is what replaces original Type"A".Or just refill with Type "F".?

I know there are differences in opinion about this and it does make a difference (so I have been told) on when the trans may have been rebuilt, but I ran Type F in my 56 Bird with no problems. I had no history on the trans but when I had the trans serviced (not rebuilt) I went with the Type F. I have since switched to a C-4 trans.

For what it's worth, the sticker on the inside of my 57 cars glove box door, says to use type "A". As I understand it, type "A" was replaced by Dextron II, not type "F". The label of an older bottle of type "F" I have on hand, is damaged to some degree, but there is no reference to it being used in mid 50s Ford car transmissions at all..

The symptoms you described regarding the lack of engagement at start-up or in cold temperatures were exactly the same I had on my 57 Fairlane with the Fordomatic. I was planning to overhaul the engine on the car so I decided to get the transmission rebuilt at the same time. The repair shop ordered a seal and clutch rebuild kit and kept the old seals for me to show me how hard they had become over time. They had lost all elasticity and were so brittle they would break in your fingers.
After the rebuild, I refilled the transmission with Type F fluid. This was 4 years ago and the transmission is performing flawlessly (both on cold starts and after long runs).
Good luck with your diagnosis and repair, but it sounds like the seal issue is likely responsible for the lack of engagement on the cold starts.

the fluid that is called murcan was recomended by a ford teck. I had a older mersadies with a slow shifting trans,actually sliped into gear,cleaned the filtre and istaled murcan 2. cured the problem.it is pricey tho
