Optimum "Down" Angle for a Y-block

Hey Yall,


I'm doing a little measuring to align my driveshafts. now that I know the trans won't interfere with the cab......
Can't do it until I get the angle on the engine.
Can't get the angle on the engine until I set it by welding the trans mount together.

Can't well the trans mount together unless I know the optimum angle of the Y-block dangle!


So, what should it be?  I'm going to "guess" at 3 degrees (down)   Am I close?

I have the angle on my falcon set at 3 degrees, in your case I would set the engine level at the intake manifold, in other words with the intake on place a level on the carb flange and 0 it out. This should put you at 3 degrees down.

the face angle,out put to diff input flange must be within 5degrees.ther is a inexpensive magnetic degree tool that is magnetic and acurate.. if your engine is not in its final position check the input flang on diff ,move the engin so it is within 5 degrees with 4 wheels on the ground .the engine can be higher and off centre as long as it is a strait line tothe frame. re ford econo line had ofset diff to the engine. just remember 5degrees.

Thanks for the info.  Mine might be different.  I have 2 drive shafts. According to Dana/Spicer,  the front shaft is recommended to be 1-1.5 degrees down from the engine centerline. Then the pinion much be parallel to the front shaft.


I have a Spicer installation manual for multiple drive shafts.  I just wanted to make sure that approx 3 degrees was correct for the 292.


I did place the intake manifold on the engine and put a level on it. With it level within 1/2 a bubble, the engine appears to be about 2.5-3 degrees down.


My rear axle ratio is 6.80:1 ............at 60 MPH, the drive shaft RPM is going to be approx 3500 RPM.   If I get it right, there'll be no vibration!


If I use the 2 speed axle I have, the RPM at 60 will be approx 2900 RPM (5.83:1 ratio in high range)

What is the "stock" engine level at....O.... or up or down? I'm using the head as my plane.
