Over at Gils Garage, they speak highly of the quality and volume of water the Mr. Gasket 4367 thermostat  provides for Y blocks. Best price I have found is $16 and change with free shipping on Amazon with orders over $35. They average $20 or more at all the other places I looked. Is anyone familiar with this thermostat for the Y block and is there a general consensus that its that much better than a standard issue?

It's made in China.  I had  one and it failed it an unreasonable amount of time.  One failure does not necessarily indicate a bad part, though.  Even the best, highest quality brands have the occasional failure.

The same style can be found Made in USA but it will cost more, like $20 - $25.  Milodon is a source for one.

Is the Milodon one for Chrysler/Dodge and FE Ford (p/no.16406) the correct one?
Thanks, Al.

I see Jegs has them for around $23 bucks with free shipping. If 16406 is the correct part, it verifies made in USA. But....it says designed for high volume water pumps. So does it serve any purpose to use a high flow thermostat with a stock water pump? If we use this thermostat, is it recommended to install a high volume water pump?

I found this on the Race-Mart site, suitable for high volume pumps. A smaller fan pulley will make our standard pump higher volume.

Milodon 16406 180° Thermostat - Chrysler (All) and Ford 390-428 (pre '67)

These High Flow Thermostats greatly aid the proper functioning of a high performance cooling system. They are engineered to warm the engine to a proper operating temperature without making it run hot enough to lose power. Also the "Balanced Sleeve" design is highly recommended for use with High Volume water pumps. With other thermostat designs, the increased flow generated by High Volume water pumps can actually attempt to hold the thermostat closed. The "Balanced Sleeve" design equals the pressure exerted on the thermostat allowing its operation to be solely regulated by coolant temperature.

So your saying its an option to run stock pump, high flow thermostat, and change pump pully to smaller diameter to increase flow? I noticed on some of the reviews of the Mr. Gasket pump, guys noted higher tempretures. That must be what this artlice is talking about with the different desgin and high flow pumps?

I don't think you have to have a high flow pump.  I think it is just suitable for a high flow pump - you wouldn't want to restrict the flow of a high flow pump with a thermostat which is too small.

Any variance in temperature between any two 180 degree thermostats should be minimal.  If it is significant, it is probably something wrong with one of the thermostats.  Both the Mr Gasket and Milodon were very close, in fact I'd say identical as far as operating temperature went.  There was no difference I could tell, watching the gauge with my eyes.

16406 is the correct part and I can verify as recently as 10/3/2013, it is made in the USA.

Thanks Charlie, Is the Milodon 16406 the right part?

16406 is correct.

An option is the NAPA #6 thermostat.  It is a 170 degree, wide mouth stat.

Darrell, before you change the pump pulley size or consider a high volume pump read this article.  Not about Y blocks but does include a fair amount of research on engine cooling.  They found and others on this site have found that substantially increasing  flow in the cooling system can reduce cooling rather than increase it.

I will definitely check that out Mark, Thanks.

I use NAPA part # 191 180 degrees made in the USA and they work great. I take it out of the box before I buy it and push it open with my fingers, if it's smooth it's mine if it's rough try another.

Made in USA.....Good deal!

It's amazing what a rip off epay is when a thermostat at Napa here in Asheville is around $6 plus tax. Does not include gasket thou.
By paul2748 - 11 Years Ago
People keep saying what  ripoff ebay is.  It's not ebay, it's the sellers on ebay.  And there are deals on ebay if you know what your looking for and don't go overboard.  You heard the old axiom - "There's a sucker born every minute"

That's true, I myself find a good deal at times on Ebay. But I like to compare prices on Ebay and parts houses and go from there. And you are right, their are people on Ebay that really price their stuff way too high compared to what you can get it for locally. So bottom line it pays to shop around for the deals.

I read the article about the hot "Tiger" and first thing - it says the "hot idle" speed is 850/950 rpm. My Y isn't set-up that way, I'd have to run the idle up and let it slam into gear when shifted from neutral / park. Ain't apples and apples............even with the smallest pulley my water pump still isn't turning the rev's they've got on the crank.

There is a NAPA t-stat that has the 1.5 poppet and 170º open temp. Is it #6 or #7? What you want to avoid is the two inch diameter sheet metal disc with the 1.0 inch poppet.
