Teapot on a '57 Fairlane

Before I go through the trouble of prettying up and installing the "A" manifold that came with the '56 292 in my '57 Sunliner, I wanted to ask you guys if you know whether a teapot with a '56-style oil bath air cleaner would even fit under the hood of a '57 Ford.  I am of the understanding that the 3 new 4-barrel carburetors offered in '57 were designed to be low-profile in order to accommodate the new car's lower hood---and low profile, the Teapot ain't.  If it doesn't fit, am I going to have to use a different manifold?

Assuming that the carb won't fit under the hood, I doubt that changing the intake manifold will solve the problem. Even though you state that your '57 car has a '56 engine, it's likely best to convert to a 57 & later carb & intake. However, to get it all to mesh properly will also require a 57 & up Distributor. I realize this isn't a cheap & easy fix, but it will make the car closer to correct.

Weather this applies or not, the two four set up on a 57 ford if I'm not mistaken came with Teapots.

But the 2-4 air cleaner was a much lower profile than the '56 passenger filter.

There you have it, use a lower profile air cleaner.

I can't remember if the lower profile air cleaners from later years will not fit a teapot or the oil bath air cleaner will not fit the newer carbs. I know I've tried one with the other but I don't remember which.

They will work. An open filter will work when the air filter is high enough to clear the teapot. The base circle on the carbs are the same. You can for instance use a 57 t-bird air cleaner on a teapot BUT the filter has to be tall enough to clear the top of the carb, or use a non drop base and then use a thinner air filter. Been there done that.

Forgot to mention I have not tried a teapot on a 57 ford but the air cleaners will work.

Speedpro, I looked it up and you're right, the '57 E-code used Teapots.  For some reason I thought it used AFBs.  At any rate, I think I have my answer:  get a different air cleaner!  Fine by me, as I didn't really want to use the oil bath unit.

I already have a '57-style distributor.  Doesn't the Teapot require some sort of modification to work properly with the dual-advance distributor?
By speedpro56 - 11 Years Ago
Ted Eaton did an article on that, maybe he'll chime in on the modification.

The teapot actually doesn't need any modification for a dual advance distributor. It does need to have one of the vacuum ports plugged to use a 57+ distributor.

As Gary  just mentioned, Ted did an article in Y-Blk Mag recently on that very issue.. which is why everyone on here should subscribe to it!

Here’ the link to the Holley Teapot modification article that was published in the Y-Block Magazine.

Don't forget the F codes ran a bigger teapot on a modified (Raised) B intake. Used a bonnet instead of the normal aircleaner

Meteor: You just missed the last bi monthly issue, Mar-April, #122, so it may not come till the next one, in late June.

Thanks for posting that article, it was exactly what I wanted to know about.

I have a spare '57 Carter AFB;  is there any downside to using an adapter such as this?

There should still be plenty of hood clearance as the AFB is not a tall carburetor.  That way, I wouldn't have to modify the Teapot and could perhaps sell it.  It's an ECZ-L unit, not sure that it's worth anything special.
