Is it possible to install a temp sender adapter into the freeze plug hole in the pass side head while the engine is in the car?I am not too keen on drilling and tapping a good "B" manifold to fit a fan switch.

Yes, it's possible to install the bushing, but you will probably have a tight fit with the distributor cap and sensor.

Your coolant temperature will also be about 15 degrees lower than the temperature at the thermostat housing so you will want to compensate for that difference some how.

I managed to fit one in with the distributor in place, I wasn't too bad. You've probably already noticed that there are two different sizes for 55 or 56.

I was going to remove the distributor to make it easier to get to.
I have a 180* thermostat, and the fan switch i have comes on at 195*, so i guess the fan will not come on until 210* ?
How did you install the bushing (with a piloted drift?), and did you cool it to install ?The '57 one (according to Mac's) has the smaller thread.

Slick, that's where I have my fan switch. I have a mechanical SW temperature gauge in the other side. I have found on my engine that it is within ~5°F of a temperature gauge I installed in the intake manifold (hole for the heater hose) to check.

I believe that I had it in the freezer for a while on the theory that it couldn't hurt. I did take the dist cap off and used a piece of pipe I had around threaded into the bushing for a driver. Might note that I have a Mallory distributor which might be just different enough to allow the installation. I installed the larger 55 style to allow use of a mechanical gauge along with the factory gauge.
