Im finding it hard to get a rear shock number for KYB shocks, its for my 56 Town Sedan. Has anyone got a set on their Fairlane what ones did you use?? I think at one point someone mentioned KG5517. I have 1 1/2" lowering blocks in but shouldn't make much diff' . So long as they are long enough to get the wheel off, Im having that problem now whatever shocks I have are just slightly short and getting the wheels off is a PITA.

Interesting that you bring this problem up. My 57 Fairlane has KYB rear shocks & I noticed recently that I had trouble removing & re installing the wheel on the drivers side recently. Seems to me that I read something about this problem before, quite some time ago. Effectively, the KYB's listing for our old Fords isn't quite correct. If I recall correctly, the shock is slightly shorter than the original. In my case, I ended up removing the lower shock nut, forcing the shock up & out ot the bracket, & installling a spare curved shock washer, I had on hand, on the up side of the axle, to get a bit more clearance. However.. I also discovered that the left rear corner of the car had been worked on at some time in the past. When reassembled, a supplementry approximately 5/16" pad that fits between the body & the rear cross member had been omitted. That likely aggravated the clearance problem. I hope this information helps? P.S.- 2nd edit; Thinking about this again. My memory isn't the best to start with, so I'll throw this caveat in. It's possible that the recollection I had was about Gabriel shocks rather than KYB, so sorry if I may have muddled this subject further...

Talk, KG5517 is the correct #. I have 2" lowering blocks and I had trouble getting the wheels off. I installed 'shock extenders to alleviate the problem somewhat.
The # for the front is KG4503 if interested.

I'll cross reference the 5517 number and see what it's for.
I can get a set in Australia for $325 or from rock auto $ 245. Summit came out about $285 ?
Might check and see if rock auto have those extensions...

As Paul mentioned below there may be some problems with the KYB site catalog listings.They don't list a rear # for 56 Fords when using the online catalog.They list the KG5517 for the 55-57 Birds. When bringing up the details page they do list it there for 56 Fords.They list the KG5526 for 57 Fords.Here is the "rub" - pardon the pun.The Ford Part Interchange for shocks (see attachments) lists that the rear shocks for 55-57 Birds, most 56-57 Fords as the same # - B7A18125SH. (Group 48)
Here are the details on the KYB Shocks:
KYB Part# Extended Compressed Stroke
KG5517 17.87 10.91 6.97
KG5526 20.43 12.46 7.95
Perhaps the KG5526 should be used on the rear of all???
The extension from 17.87 to 20.43 may be what is needed for getting the tire off easily.
Unless someone knows the details on the B7A18125SH, it is still somewhat of a Crap Shoot.

I looked at the KG 5526 's but the mounting is different. So back to the KG 5517..
I found an old pair of Gabriel's I had on and measured them . Measured from the end of the body is 20" long 12" compressed and I also had a mark that I put on them when attached to the car that was 14" from memory I had no problems getting the wheels off with those.. I want to try stick to the KYB's as they are a firmer shock..

I don't use the bumper bar jack though.
After raising the car I use a small bottle jack between the spring and the chassis as I don't like the way the bumper jack distorts the car on one corner

Yup I can get the same thing through RockAuto [USA] for nearly $100 cheaper.
I probably order today.
Interesting concept using the jack between the body , you would have to be careful and know your shock can take the length.. Ask me how I know!

I have had KYB shocks on my 56 crown for several with no problems getting rear wheels off.Dont know how I came up with the number for the shocks I used but they are Front KG 4503 and rear is KG 5517 Carl
