It's time for my 1st tuneup on my 272c.i.,I forgot how much fun it was to do a hot valve adjustment!(LOL). A little info on the motor----Blue Thunder aluminum 4-barrel manifold,Road Demon 525cfm. carb,Crane cam(S-264-C),Reds headers,MSD distributor &StreetFire plug wires.Questions are what spark plugs/heat range should I use? And what about timing (standard is 3 BTDC, no more than 6 BTDC) should I bump it a little or stay in the 3-6 range as suggested for stock setting? Oh,it's backed by a 4-speed if that makes a difference. Thanks for any help on this, haven't played with a Y-block since the late 60's.  SKIPw00t

I wouldn't see any reason why your timing could not be set at 8-10 degrees. My Y sure likes it! I would try it and see what you get as far as performance goes. That motor may wake up even more.w00t

g'day skip

i agree with dan set your timing at 8-10 degrees my 272 is set at 8 it gets good economy & it flys when you give it a boot full its only done 8000miles as for your spark plugs if they are a nice light brown color i wuold put the same type of plug back in its running perfect at that color. i just did my valves again so i know how you feel ya gotta lve burnt fingers lol.

Re burnt fingers trying to set the valves at .019. If the cam is stock, setting them initially at .020 cold seems to work fine as long as your rockers aren't worn. Setting them hot, especially if you aren't experienced at it (like me) can be a real test of patience..

I run my timing on 12 degrees ( 56 sunliner 292 - 56 merc 312 - 56 tbird 312+++ with no problems with pinging.) The sunliner and tbird have the 57 style setup. I found the performance to be very good overall in this area. If you try this and hear any pinging under load then I would backup a couple degrees. My Ys seem to run alittle crisper off the line with 12 degrees, but with defferent setups then lower may be better.
