The names Gordon, I live down here in Adelaide Australia & I am presently rebuilding a 256 Y Block to install into my 48 F1 – upgrade from the flathead 6 in there at present

This is my first Y Block & I have many questions on the rebuild one of which is the choice on valley covers (WITH  or WITHOUT  REAR BREATHER) if I choose a cast alloy one with a fitting for a PCV GROMMET can I then do away with the “Block mounted bake bean can breather” which I am told can get fumie  –
or Do I need a PCV set up or can I just rely on the oil filler cap as a sole breather source? – do I then need to do anything else? is there enough ventilation space from sump to valley to be able to do this? (oil drains and distributor shaft cut outs)

I see a few aftermarket valley covers with no oil filler or PCV Grommet breather – how do they achieve engine breathing (oil filling?)

If you install a Valley Cover with the rear breather opening ( either late stock or aluminum aftermarket) & a PCV setup, you should remove the block side canister & install a gasket & cover. Do not rely on the oil filler cap screen only, for crankcase venting. That was the original air intake point for the system. Unfortunately that was a weak point in the system, as the screen tended to get plugged up & it was often not serviced. However, the crankcase does require some sort of filtered air intake.. Others on this site may have further details on the best way to complete the setup, depending on what carb & intake manifold you are using etc.

G'day Gordon. You live only about 5 miles from me,
you are most welcome to come view my PCV conversion and talk Y-block.

My mobile is 0416 084 756.

I am using the side breather and rear valley pan breather and so far no problems with any pressure buildup in my 56 crown Victoria at all. I have a friend that's  been doing this for several years and no problems either.

Gary: To clarify, is that without a PCV setup?..

Check that the oil filler breather cap is not obstructed. Please dont take this wrong but is oil level  correct?
By Threat51 - 11 Years Ago
Oil was good pryer lost about 3 quarts not burning oil noticed oil pressure drop.did run short distance after with breather off didn't do it but not really very far didn't have oil with me
Would bad cap do that? Was bad lol Could a pluged oil filter do that ? Have the old still still on?
Thanks Bob

2nd thing to check is the side breather canister. It has a wire/horse hair filter inside, which may be plugged up & or the oil drainback tube, in behind, is plugged. Will require removing the canister cover, then you may be able to clear the tube with a bent piece of wire or compressed air ( which may make a mess however) If not, remove the unit from the block, clean & reinstall. Also, check the canister for a crack or hole ( a rare problem but has been reported) & that the cover gasket is o.k...

Oil filters generally have a bypass that ,if the filter is plugged simply feeds the oil back in unfiltered.A blocked cap can cause your problem.

Did take cover off cleaned screen. Couldn't realy see drain hole. The canister was not full of oil.Well check again and see if I can see drain hole.Thought the oil filter would not do it just a shot in the dark.lol
Thank guys

Hi guys ,
I have a 56 thunderbird with a 312 has the same draft tube that puts oil all over the bottom of my car? I'm thinking
of putting this set up on my car and take to draft tube off. Anyone have this on there car ? Had any luck with it?
Thanks

I have a similar set up on my '56 - well worth it, no fumes and no leaks from engine.

Duffer,

For street motors, and anything but 90+ point show cars there is no downside to a PVC system. Most T-bird suppliers sell them, there's a ton of info here under the search function, and they required them as a retrofit in CA under the early smog laws.

I happen to be a believer in closed systems, but there's nothing wrong with an open one. The only problem I've seen was on here last week, when someone had the wrong PCV valve and low vacuum. Search Greenbird56's response for that one.

If you need more particulars, send me a PM. I've done several of these, as have many others here.

There is a guy on ebay selling the pcv conversion kit for 50.00, so i think i'm gonna go ahead and get one
and get rid of the draft tube. Thanks for the comments.

Duffer,
That is about the same price as from the Tbird vendors.
If I were to buy a kit I would go through them. You can put one together from info on here.
The one I saw on eBay was 65+shipping and was for a 57. There is a difference in the carb if you are stock so be sure to check with the eBay person if you buy from them and need the 56,

Jimz Bird,
Here is the one on ebay for the 56 thunderbird .
By Jimz Bird - 11 Years Ago
Duffer,
That is a couple bucks less than the one I saw in CASCO.

It probably boils down to shipping.

I don't have a thunderbird but maybe that does not matter I have a 56 mercry monclare wil this fit I have factory power brakes. Wil all this take to much vacum? Also have a carter carb. 312 eng.
Draft vent tube.
Thanks

Where is the addy I can get one from? If it will work
By Jimz Bird - 11 Years Ago
"Also have a carter carb. 312 eng.
Draft vent tube."
If everything is pretty much stock - it "should".
You probably have the WCFB with a bolt patter of 3 3/4 x 3 7/8 which is the same as the Holley 4000 on the 56. If so, the adapter in the 56 kit will fit.
If the road draft tube comes off of the valley pan cover then it is just taking that off and installing the grommet in the kit in the hole.
The valley pan with the road draft tube has an oil baffle under it to help prevent oil splashing into the PCV valve.
The idle will have to be adjusted but the power brake booster is not an issue.
Here is a list of vendors from different areas which may affect postage.

If I am off on any of this, others will clarify it for you.
By Threat51 - 11 Years Ago
My road draft tube is down on the block lower drivers side not up on the top of eng.above oil pan.
Filler tube breather is on top.
By Jimz Bird - 11 Years Ago
That is a bit more involved.
There is quite a lot on here about the different ways people have done pcv conversions.
Here is something to start on and if you want more search on pcv conversions.

Also as mentioned go to
Greenbird56 and look up his stuff.
