short of jamming a screw driver into the canister and trying to unscrew it that way, does anyone have another suggestion?

...don't have an oil filter wrench that will close down far enough to grab it.

help!

Mark;

You can try a  "Channel Lock", but be careful not to crush the canister. Also, you can try a rubber strap wrench which are used  in the kitchen for opening jars. Those work pretty well.

Mark,
If you have an old leather belt which has "shrunk" - several of mine have - cut it a little lager than the circumference and grab the "tabs" when you wrap it around with vice grips or channel locks.

have old leather belt, don't have enough "grunt" to unscrew the filter canister...

more on that later.

I use a strap wrench that I bought from Sears.  Use it near the top, less chance of doing any harm.

one strap wrench from Sear Hardware later, canister removed and new filter installed!

best $7 spent lately.
