Removing the cam bearing and reusing it has been done. If the cam bearing comes out undamaged and reinstalls tightly in the cam bore, then you will be good to go. The engine really does need to be completely disassembled though to insure that the cam bearing holes are indeed aligned with the holes in the block. If having to tear the short block assembly completely down, then I would consider deepening the center cam journal groove and/or installing a groove on the backside of the bearing. On the Y engines I put together, I machine the necessary groove in the center cam hole.
