So, I have just fired up my 312 Mercury engine after having replaced the rope type rear main seal with a neoprene two-halves type from Best Gasket. Did not lower the crank but it went OK all the way. No need to raise the engine either, just removed the sway bar and moved the oil cooler lines.Very pleased!

Did you use the Sneaky Pete tool to get it around the crank or something else? I thought that the Sneaky Pete was designed to work only with the rope type seal. Alan S. Freeman

No, I pushed it by hand at first, at the same time turning the crank for the seal half to follow and then I made a tool from a piece of wood for the last portion of the seal, using the tool and turning the crank.
