  1. I am rebuilding a y block engine and I am replacing the canister filter with a new one and I want to make sure I am doing it right. A rubber washer goes
on the bolt first and after you insert it in the filter housing you put another rubber washer on then the double spring then the filter cartridge and finally
    the housing gasket. Thank you.

Timmy:

The gasket under the head of the bolt should be a rigid fibre gasket, or you won't be able to tighten the can enough to keep it from leaking where it seals against the block.  So the sequence would be: fibre washer, can, spring, rubber washer, filter cartridge, rubber washer.  There is also a rubber gasket where the can seats against the block.

Timmy:

You're welcome.  Incidentally, most of us Y guys use the adaptor kit and convert to spin on oil filters.  But, if you want your '55 to be "correct", you have to use the cannister.
