After rebuilding my 292 I went to put the water pump pulley on but it is to far back on the water pump. It's not line up with the crank and gen pulley. The crank is all the way in as well cause I checked. Is there some sort of spacer that goes between the water pump and the pulley to bring it in line with the other two pulleys?

The correct pulley will not need a spacer. If it is not too far off, you can make one to get it lined up.

when you say 2 pulleys, in the car aplication the water pump and generator and iner pulley should all line up.the outer crank pulley is for the power steering punp. that is the way on my 1957 ranchero with p stering.

Up. I just bought the truck and it hadn't ran in a couple years. I am assuming it would have thrown the belt cause you can see right when it leaves the water pump pulley that it is angled. It did have a wider crank pulley on it though. It had the 1/2 inch one verses the original
3/8 inch. Could that make it line up enough that the belt would have stayed on?

I don't know how the dimensions compare between the 3/8 and 1/2 pulleys. It could work out so that it makes up for the offset. However, it will not change the relationship of the generator pulley to the water pump pulley so there would still have been a problem there..
A water pump pulley for a truck is different than a car. I think it is deeper but it also has a 3/4" hole in the center for the water pump shaft. A car water pump will mount directly in the place of the truck pump but it has a smaller shaft, 5/8" and the pulley should be shallower. When the pump and pulley assembly is used together, the belt will line up.but if pumps and pulleys are mismatched, they will not line up. Because of the difference in shaft diameter, the only possible mismatch is to use a car pump with a truck pulley. Without knowing the depth of the pulley, this will be apparent by the 1/16" gap between the od of the pump shaft and the id of the pulley.

just parted out a 292 from aheavey truck,it used 2shiv pulley set up,spaceings quite diferent than light truck. the water pump had a 2shive pulley that lined up with crank pulley,also wp had large shaft. .one can move the adaptor but it is a job for a bit of care. to move the adaptor a puller and a bit of heat will work. to push it in you need a press and it is imperitive to suport the shaft ,not the impellor.ether way you will have a basterd i regards to replacement. Now is the time to sort the problem so you have a stock system. good luck

I think this is one of the most confusing things with parts swapping a Y-Block. I've never seen a parts reference list with what parts fit together. It would be a nice project for someone. Part numbers and pictures would be really nice. Or am I making too much of it? Chuck

You don't mention what year truck? It sounds like you are trying to match a car dampener with an early truck setup that used the raised fan mount that had the wider belt for the fan and a separate belt for the water pump and generator, I have an original setup outside I will go take a picture of, but I think you are going to need the mating parts from either a later or earlier setup.

If this works, here is the old style truck pulley setup. It worked! as you will note the fan is separate from the water pump, the later trucks the fan was mounted on the same pulley as the water pump. Still need to know what you are shooting for the earlier or later setup?

63 Y block but what year truck? if you had a wide belt in a 63 that was incorrect. someone put an earlier motor in a later truck. sounds like you now need the mating later components.

The truck is a 63 as well. It had a 1/2 inch crank pulley on it previously which I found out was the wrong one so I switch to the 3/8 inch crank pulley which match the water pump and gen pulley. The only I have noticed is the water pump pulley has some play in the centering hole where it slides on the water pump. There is maybe 1/32 to maybe a 1/16 inch gap on the centering shaft. Does that mean anything?

This means that you have a truck pulley on a car pump. You need a car pulley and then everything should line up.

When everything is in place and you need to move a bit more or less fore and aft for a perfect alignment - I had to use a press and push the four bolt pulley mount on the pump shaft back toward the engine. It's not a mammoth amount of force required (if the shaft is shiny and clean).
