Can some one please tell me the trick to holding the starter gasket in place when trying to insert the starter in the bell housing and is the gasket necessary thank you

I didn't know there is a starter gasket. Never used one. How about holding it on with a couple dabs of silicone?

Starter dust boot one of the things that dealership mechanics routinely threw away (along with spark plug shields).
In my case, it took 3 hands to install it. One to hold the starter in place, and two to get the bolts started!

Dust boot was also to make it a little softer sounding as well.
