I'm really new to Y-Blocks. I have a 59 Ford Fairlane Convertible with a 292.The motor needs to be rebuilt. I have found a 312 marine engine, I want to take the heads off the 312 and put them on the 292.Also want to chane thei intakes want the 4 barrel off the 312. The 312 intake being a marine application dose not have the right hook up for a top radiator hose or tstat housing.Question is do they make an adapter to cross over on the heads or do I cut the front part of the water jacket on my old intake and machine it to fit. Really don't want to reinvent something that might already be in place. Thanks for the help Dave

Cutting up your old intake might work.   Many marine intakes are of a single plane design which isn't usually the best idea for a street engine.  Is the marine 4 barrel intake a single or dual plane design?
You might be able to find some of these which are used for other marine applications.  Some kind of thermostat housing will have to be found or made.

Check the casting numbers on the heads you already have on the ’59.  If they are both 113’s, then you already have the big valve heads.  Likewise they could have been changed out to a set of ECZ-G’s which are also big valves.  Those casting numbers are located under the intake at the front water ports on the heads.

The marine intake fully loaded has two one barrel carbs and is not to be confused with a four barrel intake.  Those one barrel carbs are designed for steady state running.  I haven’t looked at one of those setups in awhile but I don’t remember a provision at the carb(s) for the vacuum advance on the distributor.  Most of those marine engines used a Mallory mechanical advance only distributor so it would make sense there would be no carburetor port for a vacuum advance distributor.

Charlie and Ted are more knowledgable than I am. But, if you've got a 292 in need of a rebuild, and a 312 with a usable crank, that's a really good starting point. The crank can be turned down for the 292 mains, and you've got a 312 stoke, plus the overbore on the 292 block. If the crank is really good, and the block sonic checks, you can do a stroker up to 340 or so. Even if it's been turned, 320 is possible. It's not cheap at this point, as you're looking at custom rods, pistons, etc. Go have a look at John Mummert's site, http://www.ford-y-block.com , and look at what he's got. You might also take a look at http://www.eatonbalancing.com/blog/ , an excellent source of y block info.

You don't say, but are we assume the 312 block is damaged or corroded to bad to use?.. If it's rebuildable & your 292 needs a re do, rebuild the 312.

the 312 is a Montana block and has had some ice in it result cracked block. But i do have a good crank and my 292 in the car runs good just smokes

Have you checked rotation of that Marine engine yet?

not using the 312 marine block its broke looking for some heads the ones on the marine are low compression

Which heads are currently on your engine?
By speedpro56 - 11 Years Ago
A lot of 292's from 1959 had the preferred 113 heads. If that's what you have then you're good to go.

currently I'm pretty sure they are 292 not sure of the casting #s to much burnt on oil hope to pull the motor after the new year and start my rebuild project did find a intake if you have or know of some 312 heads i would be very interested in buying a good rebuildable set thanks for your help Dave

Cylinder heads depending on year are not necessarily tied to one displacement of engine. In 1957 for instance 2 or 3 sizes of engines used the same heads.   As stated before, you can check at the inside corners of the heads at the intake manifold, without removing the engine. Original 1959 heads will likely be marked 5752 or 113 on the corners. Some earlier heads had the casting marks near the exhaust ports..

You should at least check john mummerts website before you make any decisions.

Enjoy.

With few exceptions, there are no 312 heads.  The good heads came from the factory on several displacements.  Further, after 50+ years, the engine can have anything on it.  And, not all 312s came with the good heads so just looking for a "312" head can get you something worse than you may already have.  If you just want a spare set of heads, that's fine but if you would like to potentially save some time and money, find out what you have first.
