I bolted the starter that came with the car on the bell housing and after I tightened it up I can turn the starter shaft one way and I hear the gear that is attached to the starter click. I always thought it should disengage from the flywheel. and also what kind of cap goes on the end where the starter shaft protrudes

Timmy:

The starter is probably OK.  It needs for the engine to start to spin the starter drive fast to disengage the teeth.  There was a pressed steel cap that fit in the hole in the bellhousing.

Thx

Timmy,I THINK maybe(not sure) you are after the bushing that is pressed into the end housing.TEE-BIRD.com has them.Part# 11052A. Bushing, starter front end plate.$1.75.If you dont mind a suggestion, get a parts catalogue on CD.I have the one from Detroit Iron and it has parts catalogue, shop manual, trans manual, and more. They are available online order.Search=Detroit Iron.Extremely useful for illustrations and shop manual how-to.Sounds like you are going to be doing a LOT of work on this car.You might consider my suggestion.
