according to Mr. Mummert's website info, my ECG block casting indicates I have a 272 in my 57 Fairlane that might be a '57, '56, or 55 block, correct? went to purchase a new oil pan drain plug and it was mentioned by the retailer that the "large" drain plug like I have indicated a '55-'56 engine. is there any way I can identify the year of manufacture of my engine? There should be a coded date of manufacture cost into the block. Don't exactly know where it is. It's a short series of numbers and letters. If you can find them, post it here and we can decode it.

if ECG appears back by the dist, its a 56 or earlier.in 57 they are cast over the oil filter.

If the oil filter was originally the spin on type, then it's a 57 or later. Ford went to spin ons in 57. It's hard to tell if it was an earlier block if the filter was already changed to a spin on.
