Hi this may be a second post since I have benn using the old Web link, but I went to adjust the timing on my 292 Yesterday
As soon as I begin to rotate the distributor a fraction in either direction the Engine cuts off. ? Could there something grounding out inside the Distributor. I had just adjusted the points and the car starts instantly and idles well. I'll pop the cap and check the connections BTW I see that the timing was set at 30* BTDC

I would look at the internal ground within the distributor and also check the wire that leaves the distributor going to the coil.  It could possibly has a small break in it.

Thanks I just checked what I could see And it all "looks" good ground inside by the points assembly is strong & tight But I cannot see inside the coil wire I'll run it later and give it a little tug to see

Ed, carefully check the little braided wire inside the distributor that screws to the plate the points are mounted on. Advance the point plate with the engine OFF and see if a good ground is maintained. This can cause the engine to die if the ground is lost. Pete

Also check the wire into the condensor .They sometimes break at the entry

I had a similar problem way back in 1960. Car would cut off without warning. Took forever to find but it was the condenser wire broken inside the covering. Take it out and see if it comes apart. Chuck

That internal ground wire seems to be fine from appearances. The external Wire to the Coil is fine. The engine has never cut off during regular operation. It's probably a good idea to change out the points and condensor now anyway.

Try to avoid the "high quality" foreign made points and condensors most auto parts stores sell. I had a chink condensor leave me on the side of the road last saturday.Fortunately I had a spare.NAPA can still get echlin and blue streak ignition parts for our cars.

Another thing-I had a new Cardone distributor in my 55 and was having a problem with a miss.It turned out that the connector that is on the points to coil wire was crimped mostly on the insulation rather than the wire.It was making intermittent contact.Everything looked just fine.Better to trust your VOM in this situation than your eyes! Smile
