90 Degree Oil filter Adapter

I'll be installing a '56 F-600 steering box in my '56 F-100 soon, and I hear there may be clearance issues with the oil filter.
I'm using the common FL-1A Ford V8 filter.  Has anyone used a 90-degree adapter on a Y block?

Yes, Ford actually had one as Original Equipment on Y blocks that went into big trucks with ram horn exhaust and tight steering gear/frame rails as I recall. Surely someone on the site has one they will sell to you pretty cheap.

What about a remote mount filter and relocate the filter to the frame under the cab of the truck?

I know of a 90* filter housing but its for the FE bocks and I can not find any Ford illustration or part number related to a 90* oil filter housing for the Y blocks.

The '56 F600 that we have at work that sported the proper Lincoln Y block had the plain old filter screwed into the side of the block with no 90* adapter but then again this was a single exhaust truck so there was no exhaust in the way on the driver side by the oil filter itself.  Plus the gear box mounted further aft which prevented the installation of true dual exhaust.

if the FE ones are the same below is the part numbers for them if one wants to hit up ebay or their local dealership to check for availability.

'58 to '59 - 332/352 - C0AE 6881-A
'59 - 430 - B8E 6881-A

And the bolt adapter to block is a 5/16"-18 x 1 1/8" and its part number is 20406-S8

If the potential interference is only slight, why not just go with a filter shorter than the common FL-1A? I use the shorter filters on all my Y Blocks (with a "Filter Mag").

If you can use the F-1 type filter and it just needs to be shorter (not stick out from the block as far as the F-1) try a Fram PH8994. It has the same thread pattern (screws right on) is the same diameter but is an inch or so shorter. I had to use one to clear the steering linkage on my '56 Ford Fairlane when I changed to Rack & Pinion steering. If you need more room you may need to use the 90 degree angle design.

Yes- I had though of a shorter filter.  I do have the rams horns manifolds, so I'll wait and see how it all looks and go form there.
