Does anyone have any knowledge of converting an oil bath air filter off a 56 Fairlane to dry-type cartridge?I saw one on Ebay a while ago that had been converted to accept a cartridge.Any input appreciated!Thanks Mark

I actually cut the innards out of mine and found a Moroso open element unit that fit in perfectly.  A little bit of cutting, but the diameter of the filter fit the opening just right, and it looks 100% stock from the outside.

Hello Rgrove,Yes thanks,I'd like to have a look if possible.I had a look at mine hoping to simply disassemble the innards but doesn't look it is meant to come apart without cutting as you did.Mine is a 56 Fairlane with the stock 4bbl so I am hoping yours is the same and I would have a filter # to use.I'll check back later in the weekend,Might be of interest to others too!Thanks Mark

They will come apart but it takes a lot of time and patience. The top is held together by folded flange. This must be pried up to take apart. It can be done as I know a guy that does it for a restoration of TBird (55 and 56) air cleaners.

Ok, lets see if I can describe this... Basically, use this:

I just cur all of the stuff off of the underside of the top piece of the oil bath, and removed the bottom pan.  The Moros sits on inside the main body of the OE filter assy (take the bottom plate off of the moroso- the filter element is the exact right size).  Basically use one threaded rod up the middle, with a wing nut inside to keep the lid on the moroso, and another wingnut to keep the lid ont he OE assy.  I run a Holley 390 cfm carb, so I use a carb/air filter spacer (maybe 1/2"?) to fit the oe filter to the carb...
