Will it hurt any thing mechanical if I drive my Ford while I am getting my steering pump fixed?

My first thought would be to remove the cylinder and hoses while the pump is out  Carl

It may hurt your arms a bit. I wouldn't think it would hurt anything else. When you take the pump off there will be fluid left in the lines and cylinder. Put a pan under them and move the steering lock to lock a couple times. Chuck

Been a long time, but IIRC there is some hydraulic pressure at the valve /ram assembly. Mine felt looser with the pump removed. But it was a long time ago. I pulled the pump, and drove 15 miles to the rebuilder. But all was fine when I put it back in. You will puke oil out the hoses if you dont disconnect the ram, I think.

I drove my '64 Galaxie for a couple years in the early 90's with the belt removed from the p/s pump. There weren't any pumps, new or remand, available at that time. I'd have to get the shop manual out to find it again, but I believe it said that it would not hurt anything to drive with the pump disabled.

MoonShadow is right though. Your arms will get a workout.

I'm also looking for someone to rebuild my pump, I'm not sure if the pump is leaking or the hose to the pump is leaking around where it was crimped. I had the hose made about 5 years ago, I worked in the coal mines for a while and saw a lot of leaking hydraulic hoses and mine is wet below where it;s crimped so I'm going to get the hose tested as well as the pump.
