TEA POT PROBLEMS

I have a '54 Ford Mainline Tudor "P Code" Police car with the original 256 and Tea Pot Carburetor.  The engine idles very smoothly but completely "craps out" or stumbles when the accelerator is applied.  It is not the accelerator pump as I can see that it pumps gas out of the brass tubes when depressed.  Also, the hesitation is not just brief  (as is usually the case with a bad accelerator pump) but instead struggles to keep running and pretty much dies as soon as the accelerator is depressed.  I know for sure that the problem is the carburetor as I switched it with a good tea pot from another car and the engine ran fine.  I put the problem tea pot on the other engine and it stumbled just like the other one when equipped with that carburetor.  I want to keep the car original so I need to fix the tea pot.  Anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong with this tea pot short of sending it out for a total rebuild?  The problem carburetor looks clean like it was rebuilt at some point before I got it.  Thanks, Alan S. My vote is towards some blockages in the carb.  First check that the high and low speed air bleeds are clear.  These are located in the area around the air cleaner stud in the fuel bowl cover.  Aiming some spray carb cleaner with the nozzle tube in each hole should be sufficient to do this.  You can also try a ‘running carb flush’ on the carburetor which has been known to fix some random carb problems without actually having to perform a disassembly.  Here’s the link to a past post discussing how to do a ‘running carburetor flush’.

Ted, you were right again.  With the carburetor still on the engine, I blew some compressed air into all of the holes at the top of the carburetor under the mounting plate.  I fired it up, it backfired once blowing a hole in one of my big oval mufflers but the carburetor is fixed!  I could not drive the car faster than about 30 MPH with the problem but I just took the car out on the freeway and had it up to 80 MPH with no hesitation.  Thanks, Alan
