What is the casting # of the better rear seal retainer for a 312?.  I know there was two, one that was better than the other.

Paul.  I’m only aware of a single oem design for the rear seal retainer for the 312 engines.  From the stack of them I have to look at, all have the casting number ECZ-A.  While the casting number may be in different places on those retainers, the construction and design all appear to be the same.  There have been some aftermarket billet retainers available and those are likely stronger than the originals.

I thought I heard that there was a warping issue with some.  I guess I was wrong.  Thanks

Paul.  The original rear seal retainers for both the 292 and 312 engines are prone to warping and/or cracking if manhandled or abused.  Here’s the article that was published in the Y-Block Magazine pointing out how the side seal grooves can be distorted if improperly removed from the block.
