Hello I am working on a 1955 272 engine that was rebuilt years ago and never started , I have a preoiler hooked up to it and have cycled oil through the engine a few times. I have not yet been able to get out of the rocker shaft , I hear oil gurgling in the engine and the oiler drains quickly but no oil on the rocker shaft . I have the oiler hooked up where the oil pressure sending switch is . thanks for any answer

I've never tried a pre oiler on the block, I've always spun the oil pump drive with a socket and drill (Taped together). So I don't know if it will feed back.
You do need to turn the engine by hand, depending on how the cam bearing/oil holes/grooves were set up.

Thanks for the reply , I do turn the engine by hand while the preoiler is working I also have cranked the engine with starter while pushing oil , when I do this I get oil on the rockers . But without cranking no oil to the rockers . I was wondering if I was bypassing something in the pump circuit . Thanks again for the quick reply

you probebley have a cam with metering holes inthe cam bearing, instead of the grove type.pre lubing threw the oil sender hole is as good asgoing threw the dist .except you are not useing the oil pump, same galerey

Sounds like you have a cross drilled camshaft. They supply oil to the overhead only when the holes in the camshaft line up with the holes in the cam bearings.

If the ’55 engine has the original camshaft, then it’s the cross drilled variety. When pre-lubing the engine, the engine will need to be slowly turned over until that the center cam journal holes align with the holes in the cam bearings at which point the engine will get oil to one bank of rockers arms. Then turning the engine over some more will align those holes so that the other bank can get oil to the other bank of rockers. If the camshaft has been updated to a newer ‘grooved’ center journal design, then not getting any oil to the rockers regardless of crankshaft positioning is pointing towards a cam bearing or blocked oil passage in the block or heads issue.
