Hey all. I have a stock 1957 Tbird with a 312. I am running the original ignitor and want to add the MSD Blaster 2 (0.7 ohms 45,000 volts). I have had no luck with flamethrower 40,000 volts 1.5 ohms. they burn out too quickly. I have been running the Flamethrowers without a ballast resistor as per Pertonix instructions and their tech support people who say the Flamethrowers are internally resisted and DO NOT require external resistors. My questions are • can I run the ignitor with the MSD Blaster 2 coil (is 45,000 v output compatible with the Ignitor • can I run the original FORD style Ballast Resistor that came on the car? I would like to keep the stock look. The MSD Ballast Resistor is 0. 8 ohms. Does anyone know what the stock resistor is? Does anyone tried this combo?
Any comments or advice would be appreciated. Thanks all

I have the stock distributor with tach drive. I do not know the model number as the stamping is not clear. I also want to keep it stock looking as possible.
thanks

Nat on my 55Tbird I have a 57 312 with the Ford tach drive distributor and the Pertronix ( base model igniter) and I use a generic 12 volt coil with 1.30 to 1.50 ohm resistance per the Ford shop manual and a ballast resistor. I have had this for more than 15 years and I have NEVER had a problem. Why do you feel the need for a 40,000 volt coil? Unless you are trying to turn the engine at 6000 RPM what is the point? For a driver use what Ford used Plus the Pertronix igniter and leave the MSD stuff for the serious racers. Pete

Nat, I run the same setup as Pete in my '56 Bird and concur with his experience and advice; good up to around 6K. WLJ

I run a pertronics base model also. I bought their stock appearing coil for my 56 Victoria. I called them about running a stock ballast resistor with the unit. They said all would work fine but because of the resistor the voltage would not be high and would not get the potential of the unit. If you read reviews on Pertronics you will find problems with coils but not if use with a stock resistor. I've had it installed for 3 yrs and the car starts perfect every time...good luck

I have a pertronix II with their coil and no resistor. (per their instructions). I have had it in about two years without any problems. I have blown 312 with pert 11 and ignitor coil,5yrs, tripower 305 pert 11 and ign coil 7 yrs, and 330 2 x 4 with pert 11 and ign coil, 15yrs, no resistors and no problems, just saying.
