What is the difference between the stock valley cover and one that is used with the dual 4 bbl carbs?

Has a flat center area between the two mounting bolts to clear the intake manifold.

Note:  FoMoCo changed the design of y-block valley pans for all production cars and trucks sometime after the '57 model year.  The production change was the adding of a 'dome' where the oil fill tube enters the later valley pan covers.  Methinks the dome was added to strengthen the corner area of the cover to prevent distortion of the gasket surface when the oil fill cap was removed and replaced.

I'm told that after actual production of the '57 'E' code vehicles stopped, replacement 'E' code valley pans could still be ordered through Ford dealers.  At some point, Ford ran out of actual original production N.O.S. 'E' valley pan covers, so, later over-the-Ford-parts-counter replacement 'E' valley pans also have the 'dome' where the oil fill tube enters the cover.  Soooo... some N.O.S  Ford replacement parts were actually Ford N.O.R.S. parts.  - That is, New.Old.REPLACEMENT.Stock. parts!   Smile

I got my valley pan from Larry's T Bird. Looks nothing like original but it'll work fine for my application.

Rowen:  You wrote in a previous thread from Kahuna that you were using a Ford 'E' code intake manifold on the 312 that you're assembling. 

I don't know what you purchased from Larry's in the way of a valley pan, BUT... be careful.  It is AMAZING the number of Ford 'E' code intake manifolds I've seen advertised on eBay that have had the front 'ears' repaired by welding.  I suspect that the welding has been necessitated by a previous owner THINKING that they could install the Ford 'E' manifold using a usual FoMoCo y-block valley pan.  It does NOT work.

An alternative to the pricey original Ford 2x4 valley pans or their reproduction counterparts is a piece of flat steel sheet stock.  This is what Ford used on the '56 Ford over-the-counter Power Pack kits.  Something made from ~10 gauge steel stock should work.  Another approach might be one of Charlie Price's Vintage Speed cast aluminum flat valley pans for the y-block or perhaps John and Geoff Mummert's valley pan offering would work.  John can tell you, I'm sure.

Whatever you use, be sure of your clearance before torquing your  Ford 2x4 intake down.  Trust me on this!   Smile

Easy to make a valley pan out of a piece of aluminum or steel. Then the 2x4 intake will have plenty of clearance.

Thanks Charlie. It's an aftermarket pan. Yes MoonShadow. That's exactly what it is. Flat sheet metal, oil neck and the hole for the pcv. Already had it on the engine, tightened the bolts did not torque, and it fits fine. Plenty of clearance. Rowen

What are the 2 holes at the rear of the pan for? PCV? Something else?

The small hole is for the hold down bolt. The large one was for a breather that went down the back of the block. It replaced the old one that was by the fuel pump. A lot of folks use that hole for a pcv valve conversion. Chuck

The Ebelbrock dual quad manifold does not need an altered valley cover if you want to use one of them. Not sure on the other hot rod brands....
