Yup. No advance springs above the plate is the down and dirty way to ID them. The Loadomatic's springs are on the upper side of the plate.

Wild.. Is the carb also 1957 & later design? .. it should be to connect for proper advance. If not, link to Ted Eaton's site for further info on correct adjusment or mods to the earlier carbs..

it has the teapot 4 barrel  I assume that's a 56   the intake is ecz9425a   the car doesn't run very well in fact I have to keep the choke a little open to keep it running

Here’s the link to the article explaining how to modify the Teapot carb to work with the 1957 and up distributors.  It does sound like the carb needs some work though before addressing the carb/distributor incompatibility issues.

There is a chance that Wild's outfit is simply rigged to be running on manifold vacuum - which works just fine on about a zillion old automobiles. Where is the vacuum pot connected to the engine? Wildlogger - if you (judiciously) attach a (clean) vacuum tube to the pot on the distributor - and apply vacuum with your mouth - does the point plate move? If you have a way to get a vacuum gauge on the engine - it will help your cause a tremendous amount, so hunt one down. Some pieces of rubber vacuum tubing and a plastic tee from the auto parts store will be your friend. Most of us have gathered an assortment of "old time" tune up tools - they pay off. A vacuum gauge, a timing light, and a "dwell tachometer" are big on the list.

Its perhaps a lot simpler to tune the engine to run without the Ford idle vacuum scheme - than it is for a new guy to modify a "maybe it works" teapot carb. The only difference will be that with the Ford scheme the engine is simply running on the mechanical advance alone at idle - changing to add the "ported" vacuum advance when the throttle plate opens. Its the reason the stock engines thump along, somewhat retarded at curb idle. Sounds cool - and heats the water.

I have changed everything on my 56 and most documented here on the site. Once you feel everything is sorted do yourself a favor and install a Pertronics ignition in the dist. I had 2 condensers fail before wiseing up. I continued to use the ballist resistor on their coil which is an option. Even tho my car started fine stock I would never go back to points again. The best thing is you do not need to remove the distributor to do it. Good Luck.

I bit the bullet yesterday and ordered a 465cfm holley carb and new electronic ignition distributor with 50000 volt coil.    I ordered an adapter plate but will be on the search to change the intake in the near future.   as a new car enthusiast that likes to "drive em instead of look at em" I figured this was best route for reliability.   thanx for tips

You won't regret the Holley carb choice - they really run well on these engines. Tuning to the application isn't difficult at all. Make sure you invest in a good fuel filter as well.

What brand and type of distributor did you invest in? Hopefully it has a vacuum advance pot. We can give you some good advice about setting up the spark advance curve to match the motor as well.
