Hello and welcome to the y-block world. Before you get in too deep if your car will be a daily driver start with a dual exhaust system before headers. If you keep the Ford O matic don`t go crazy on intake or carb size. Despite what many here would like to believe a 272 is never going to be a really hot preformer . It will be a lot of fun and very rewarding but do not go overboard on cam, intake or carb. The guys here are all more than willing to help and have lots of realworld experienc with Y-blocks so run your ideas by them and pick the answers that you like. Pete

I'm moving my reply here from your questions in the Classified section.  First, I think the Blue Thunder is an expensive overkill on a street 272.  But if you want one for the "WOW" factor, go for it.  The port mismatch probably wouldn't make that much difference anyway.  You can use the '57 heads on your engine if you want them.  I think a better solution would be a '56 manifold, casting # ECZ-A.  The ports would work with your heads and the teapot would fit.  Just make sure the throttle bores will accept the Lincoln throttle plates at wide open throttle.  Your '56 distributor would work, but a better solution is to use a '57 and later distributor.  It has both mechanical and vacuum advance, and can be tuned to your requirements.  The pre '57s had vacuum advance only.

John:

You mentioned using the later 57 distributors and the ECZ-A manifold and the Lincoln carb.

Are you running the later 57 distributor with the ECU Lincoln teapot.

Marv:

Yes, I'm using the later distributor and Lincoln carb on two of my cars, both street driven, both with F equipment.  Also running the same on the race car, but that is a different application, not necessarily good for street.

F codes are blower cars.

I have run the ECU carb for several years on my 56 Crown with the stock 56 distributer. I end milled the base to accept the vacuum fitting and have the stock air cleaner on it. Only the very sharp teapot person knows the difference. Those big barn doors of choke butterflies are the give away. My car is stock 56 with a 292.

Did you have to modify the carb or the distributer to function properly due to the vacuum signal.

I run a pretty quick mechanical curve, all in at 2200.  I use manifold vacuum and have 10 degrees vacuum advance max at the crank.  I  use 10 degrees distributor mechanical advance, (20 at the crank), set the total without vacuum at 30 degrees.  Gives me up to 40 degrees at cruise, but with boost it drops back to 30 tp prevent detonation.

If I understand correctly you are using only manifold vacuum. No vacuum from the carb or ported vacuum

Did you just block the signal port on the carb.

thanks

Yes, the ports in the carbs are blocked.

Thanks John:

I see I am going to have to make a trip to my buddy's shop and use the distributer machine. I will have to dust the cobwebs off the brain as it has been over 25 years since I last used the old Sun machine at a Lincoln, Mercury, Meteor dealership
