What state are you in? Does your state require a title?

The VIN is stamped into the frame directly below the battery box, which in most cases has caused the numbers to be illegible because of the battery acid leaking down.It is also stamped into the top of the rearmost crossmember, which is almost impossible to see without removing the body from the frame. The number is on the data plate attached to the drivers side windshield post. It's right where you hit your knee getting in or out of the car.The VIN starts with the letters A,M,P or U.

This could be due to the age of the vehicle. Call your local DMV for advice! Here in NH we don't have titles for vehicles over 10 years old. In fact if you register an older vehicle here and have the title they want to take it! Can make it hard to resell in certain states. Copy down all the codes and numbers on the data plate and put them in (could work) Chuck in NH

Timmy, The 10 character set of figures and letters beginning with U5 is the VIN for a 55 Ford. All Fords of that era have a 10 character VIN.The U indicates that the car left the factory with a 272 engine and the 5 indicates that it's a 1955 model.Everything else on the data plate is the info about how the car was originally equipped and do not have anything to do with the VIN.

I called the motor vehicle department and they told me they can not give me any information on the car, they said it is private. I told them I got the car from a friend and he has no registration. They told me that I have to find out who he got the car from to get a registration.

Get in contact with your state legislator for the district you live in and tell them you are being given the run around with the registration and see if they can fix it for you. Seems like the guy you bought it from is going to be a dead end. I would get a certified bill of sale from your friendin case you need it and it seems like you might. But, you could move to another state.

Talk to other old car guys in the area. They have probably solved this problem before! When I was in Texas with my New Hampshire, BIll of Sale only 41 Ford they went nuts until I found a guy that new the ropes. Chuck in NH (A bill of sale state)
