On a trip to PA from MN to a wedding in our '54, a rear wheel bearing puked it's guts, we were lucky to find an axle, replaced it and came on home. I got busy last week, bought two complete bearings on eBay, pulled my axles out, cut the retainer rings off then pulled the bearings off with a big puller I made, this worked really good, takes a lot of pressure to remove these things. Then using my 12 ton press, carefully pressed each one on, I would estimate it took 5 tons to push them on. The retainer rings took even more pressure, probably 8 tons or so but we got them into place against the bearings tight. This friction is all that holds the bearings in place and the only thing that keeps your axles in the car. I used gasket maker on the plates that hold the bearings & axle in, also made sure the drain holes in the backing plates were open. So, now we have all new rear wheel bearings, our long trip out west in August should go a lot better, at least we hope so.
A big THANKS to all the guys that gave help with parts and advice, us Y-blockheads have to stick together.
Thanks again, Warren, in MN

Back in the day we used a torch to heat up the retainer ring red hot then dropped it over the end of the axle. It would drop straight on tight and level. Of course a press works too.

I have never pressed them on and was taught to heat them and then drop them on when they expanded. I replaced mine just a couple of months ago I would be concerned about pressed ones coming off.

Where is the retainer in the picture of the installed new bearing. I put the axle in the freezer over night, then warm the bearing inner race (put the retainer on first) use the old ring to tape the new bearing in to place. then heat the new retainer to install.
On removing the old bearing, heat the retaining ring, or cut with a grinder. with the bearing wrap alight rag around the bearing put on your safety glases, block of wood under the bearing or steel and take a 5 pound hamer and back the outr portion. it will split then heat the iner race, or cut it with a grinder being careful not to nick the axel. Only cut it 2/3 the way.then with a mild steal drift tapit off. No special pullers needed

Warren. I’m guessing that the axle retaining plates are slotted so that they slip over the axle with the bearings already in place? I’m like Cliff in that I don’t see them on your axles with the freshly installed bearings.

Guys ... It takes plenty of pressure to push those bearings on, you cannot heat them. The retainer ring is shown there, it's the smaller thing next to the bearing. These bearings have no 'shoulder', that is the ring, up tight against the bearing. Heating the rings is fine but no worries about using a good press, they go on tough, they aren't going anywhere. They were pressed on in the Ford plants, not heated. In fact, the rings and bearings could have been pushed on together in one quick operation, I'd bet the farm on it. My cousin came out of WW2 in '46, worked for Ford as production engineer all his working life, he said everything was pressed together cold in specialized machines, things we guys can't duplicate in our shops, at least not real easy.
Hope this helps ... warren

Warren. I’m in total agreement on simply pressing the bearings and the retaining ring in place without the application of heat. Only on some industrial applications did I have to use an induction heater to put a controlled amount of heat into the bearing to install the bearing on its hub. But those were some monster large bearings also. What Cliff and I were asking about are the axle retaining plates that fit between the bearing and the wheel flange and that plate keeps the axle from sliding out the housing when you go around a corner. Ford called these the ‘outer rear wheel bearing retainers’. I just don’t see this piece in your pictures. These are held in place on the axle housing with the same four bolts that hold the brake shoe backing plates in place. While most of these must go on the axle before installing the bearing, I have dealt with some that were simply slotted so that they would slip in place with the bearing already on the axle. Here’s a picture of some different axle retaining plates.

a bit of heat on the iner race and axel in the freezer works great,we are not all in front of a big press

I did the rear bearing in my 57 last week, plus brakes, good thing i did the brakes, found the front bearing were bad too. I had the rear bearing pressed by a local shop , cost me $25 plus the cost of the bearing.

Look for bearings made in the USA for durability. The China garbage won't last very long, been there done that by accident by letting someone else do it and 20,000 miles later had to do it again.

I think SKF, but these days I'm not sure.
Koyo bought all the Timkin tooling in 2011. Bearings still come in a Timkin box but most are marked Koyo or made in China on the bearing. It SUCKS.

This is a quote from National Precision Bearings:
“Made in the USA” is a traditional mark and label used by many bearing manufacturers. This statement however can be misleading. In today’s highly competitive marketplace many manufacturers seek international off-shore sources for raw materials and components (such as balls, rollers, cages and rings). As a result many of the “Made in the USA” bearings are finished and assembled in the United States but contain components and materials that have been produced off shore."
SKF manufactures in Mexico and Japan. I've used them several times and have no complaints. Like with anything else mechanical, good maintenance is the key to a long and happy life.

Cant see why the panic over all this, the bearing companys are not going to sell bearings that are inferior quality and going to fail in the miles our cars do today, regardless of 1 long trip here n there.

NOW it comes to mind ..... yea, in my haste to get this done I got ahead of myself, pressed everything together without thinking, maybe some neighbor came or who knows, I pressed it all on and then saw my 'haste-mistake'. No problem tho', I simply cut a piece out of the retainer plate, slipped it on, then welded the piece back in, shielding the bearing of course. So.... I got by with that blunder and didn't really take that much time to do but ......... the next axle was done the right way, the plate on first, then we pressed bearing & retainer on. Like I said before, it took about 12 ton to press them on guys, they ain't goin' anywhere anytime soon. As to removing the bearings, I had time, made a special puller, it worked great and with no danger of damage to the axles. The air impact did the work, no torch gas needed, no grinding, no hammers. Main thing is to replace these old wheel bearings, a breakdown with that is no fun and could leave a person really hanging, we were very lucky on our trip to have found an axle. Next job, replace my noisy glass pacs with Walker Silencers ... "Listen Maw... no more NOISE".

I think there is a difference. If it says "made in Japan or USA" there is a better chance you are getting quality. That's just my opinion anyway.

What is made in the USA anymore ... not coils, not points or condensers, you buy three and one is good, you toss the rest. Bearings almost all made overseas anymore, the days of US quality is gone, some of the stuff is OK but not likely to match what was made here. The rear wheel bearings I put in my '54 were Fafnir, not Timkin as I said, made in Turkey of all places, they looked really good and pressed on fine.... we'll see ... Donald Trump is right, we have lost our industrial base because companies simply can't make any money here anymore, taxes highest in the world, regulations that strangle and this is more of the problem than wages, we can out-produce any country but taxes and regulation makes it about impossible to exist here. I'm 83 now, have seen the USA in it's glory days when things were made here and the average Joe could make a good living making them. Now these people are on welfare and food stamps, jobs gone, pride gone.

We did a lot of this to ourselves, I started out in the 1960s as a mechanic, I made really good money,my neighbor who was my age wore a shirt and tie to work, he made haft what I did, but he was the golden boy. Find a high school student to day who can read a ruler, do math without a calicular, change a light switch in a house, change the oil in their car, even know WTH a shop manual is.....Shall I go on?...

If you think manufacturing is bad in the US it is worse here in Australia. It is almost all just mining and farming now. A couple of years back our dollar was riding high for a little while and killed any ability to compete and ended most of our manufacturing, and it wont be coming back now. We can't compete against the low labour costs of these countries with people that have a much lower standard of living. In some places they are lucky to afford a bicycle for transport.

Here in land of free & brave, we have raised taxes to pay for those that don't care to work, given just about everybody everything, and now nearly half the country is on food stamps and welfare. Hundreds of useless regulations that have killed business and preventing new business from startups, it's pure insanity of the highest level, we've killed our own economy. "Affordable" healthcare premiums soon due to grow another 20% on top of already insane costs, another job killer and means to wreck the middle class. The poor get it free, we pay the bills. The welfare state is alive and well, growing day by day and if this woman with the large posterior gets elected we may as well cash in our chips, it's over. All Establishment is against Trump, they know this outsider and super business guy would upset their corrupt apple carts and change things in a big way, badly needed. Hang on to your Y-blocks guys because it may be the only cars we an afford in time to come, I'm using mine daily, no more new cars for this old codger. I'm a liberal but trump looks a lot better than the same old I'm hearing out of the Democrats.
I got this from a republican friend, and can't agree more....
Like many citizens, I’ve wondered and tried so hard to understand why Trump has such a remarkable following. (It's obvious why he shouldn’t!) Then a friend sent me this raccoon story. It makes no difference about your political leanings, this is just a good explanation of WHY... (Or it's as good as any I can come up with). Please, don't reply with political rants from your side of the fence. This is not a message to support either party. It just helps understand how on earth Trump can remain so "popular." You have to admit, it's not easy to understand. OK. To begin, a Republican writes a letter. Read on, even if you are a Democrat. Dear Representative, , “What have the Republicans and their Party done for the American people lately?” While you seem never to have listened to us in the past Forty Years, we gave you a majority in the house and senate two years ago and you have done nothing with the power we provided you. You are the “establishment” and it’s apparent all you really want to do is to save your jobs and line your pockets. . . Well, guess what? It’s not going to happen. You can shake in your boots when I tell you our support is for TRUMP and he hasn’t asked for a dime. You might think we are fools because you feel Trump is on a self-destruct course but you look outside DC and listen to the masses. Few, if any, have achieved what he has, especially in a state of New York . If you really want to know how the majority of people feel, and this applies to both democrats and republicans, read below, it says it all. Sincerely, Here comes the part about the raccoons: You've been on vacation for two weeks, you come home, and your basement is infested with raccoons. Hundreds of rabid, messy, mean raccoons have overtaken your basement. You want them gone immediately. You call the city, the county and 4 different exterminators. Nobody can handle the job . . . But then you hear of one guy and this one guy guarantees to get rid of them. So you hire him. You don't care if the guy smells, you don't care if he cusses and swears, you don't care if he's an alcoholic, you don't care how many times he's been married, you don't care if he voted for Obama, you don't care if he has plumber's crack, you simply want those raccoons gone! You want your problem fixed! He's the guy. He's the best. Period Back to Trump Here’s why we want Trump. Yes he's a bit of an ass, yes he's an egomaniac, but we don't care. The country is a mess because its politicians suck. The Republican Party is two-faced & gutless, and illegals are everywhere. We want it all fixed! We don't care that Trump is crude, we don't care that he insults people, we don't care that he had been friendly with Hillary, we don't care that he has changed positions, we don't care that he's been married 3 times, we don't care that he fights with Megyn Kelly and Rosie O'Donnell, we don't care that he doesn't know the name of some Muslin terrorist. This country is bankrupt and appears weak. Our enemies are making fun of us, we are being invaded by illegal's, we are becoming a nation of victims where every Tom, Ricardo and Hasid is a special group with special rights to a point where we don't even recognize the country we were born and raised in. "AND WE JUST WANT IT FIXED" and Trump is the only guy who seems to understand what the people want. We're sick of our politicians, sick of the Republican Party, sick of Democratic Party and sick of illegal’s. We just want this thing fixed. Trump may not be a saint, but doesn't have lobbyist’s money holding him, he doesn't have political correctness restraining him, all you know is that he has been very successful, a good negotiator. He has built a lot of things. He's also not a politician, not a cowardly politically correct politician. And he not only says he can fix it, he says he will fix it and we believe him. And we believe him because he is too much of an egotist to be proven wrong or looked at and called a liar. Also we don't care if the guy has bad hair. We just want those raccoons gone, out of our house, NOW. You are welcome to pass this on. I feel this is why hundreds of thousands of people that haven't voted in 25 years are registering to vote this year. The raccoons have got to go. Yea guys ... things have gone to crap in this country, we are nearly a welfare state as we speak, last figures say the ENTITLEMENTS are now eating over 50% of the entire budget, we are going into debt to the tune of $65,000 per SECOND, or two billion a day or more. The Raccoons are soaking us dry folks, it has to end. Won't be long we'll owe more than we're worth and at that point we are going down the tubes, money will be worthless, those with gold and tangibles will be OK maybe.... I've been a Democrat but not this time, The Donald is the only man alive that could possibly fix this mess, he understands money and how to handle it, politicians are only good at spending. Many other Dem's are also for Trump, the woman is a complete joke. Hang onto those Y-blocks folks, when the solid state crap goes down we'll still be able to move, if we can come up with the gas.
