Howdy,

Well my E4OD is finally all rebuilt!

I haven't purchased the adapter yet and I just wanted to know if anyone else has bolted a Y to an E4OD(small block bell) or an AOD?

When the rebuilder rebuilt mine he had to replace my 7.3L diesel case with a smallblock V-8/300 I-6 case. The Bendtsen adapter is the one I'm planning on and they tell me it's for the small block V-8 or 300 I-6

I suppose I'll have to use the side engine mounts since there's no easy way to use the original truck mounts.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

On another note, Does anyone know where I could find an automatic steering column for a 53-55 truck? (I'll have the one of the very few 55 automatic F-600's!)

Don’t forget Gary Croan at Bristol Service Company when it comes to looking for AOD adapters for the Y-Block.  His adapter is not near as thick and may alleviate some transmission fit issues.  As far as I know, Gary doesn’t have a website but his contact information is as follows:

I don't know if this helps or even applies, but on my bendtsens adapter there was a surplus of material that hung down below the the oil pan line, making it awkward for me to fabricate a flywheel bellhousing splash shield. I machined this off and rounded it to be flush with the oil pan horizontal line to allow a better fit and a simple splash shield to be bent from aluminum with just one angle.

The only reason I'm showing you this is you might be able to leave this material in place on your setup and use it for rear mounting area on your truck. There is quite a bit of meat there (3/4" approx. is what I removed) to tap into or do something else with. I just didn't need it on my application.

Thanks Ted,

I'll give Bristol a call tomorrow.

I have the transmission now and I don't think I'll even try to use bell housing mounts with this trans!! It is so heavy and long with that Super Duty parking brake on the back that I think it would probably break something or pull the bolts right out of the adapter or block!

I am just going to fabricate engine side mounts like every other engine uses and use the existing rear trans mount. I have the cross member that was in the F450 that the trans came out of so it shouldn't be a problem.

I am really looking forward to using this transmission! I'll be using the Baumann Engineering controller if anyone is familiar with it.....

Now all I have to find is that 53-55 (auto-trans) truck steering column!

It appeared that the Bendtsen adapter does extend down too far.....I just assumed that they did that so someone could use it for something or cut it off. I thought about trying to use the excess but being aluminum I'm afraid it might not be strong enough.

If I use it I'll want to be able to cut the excess off to make a cover plate too!

Cheers,

Well,

I gave Gary at Bristol a call today and we had a great conversation about my E4OD hooking up to the 292. A REALLY nice guy that is very helpful. His kit is about $1000 (vs about $700 from Bentdsen)

Gary's kit is steel and a lot thinner than the Bendtsen kit so it doesn't require a thick spacer in the back of the crankshaft. He also suggested another option of sending him a bare E4OD case and he'd machine off a few inches of the case where it bolts to the engine and weld on the part of an aluminum bell housing from a 60's Cruise-o-matic that matches the Y-block.

This is probably the cleanest way there is. but it is VERY expensive.

So I have some decisions to make. I like the idea of getting it from Gary since he's a lot closer to me than the other place. (I can actually go down there to his shop if I need to)

I have pretty much decided to do the mid engine mounts and rear transmission mount.

Well, more on the 292 + E4OD

After much deliberation I decided on the Bendtsen adapter. In Fact, I got it today! AND I couldn't stand it so I bolted all the "stuff" together and it all bolted right up! The machine work is obviously C&C and nicely done.

Nothing is painted yet. The engine will be yellow and the trans will be black.

I also ordered the Baumann Engr TCS controller today too. That will round it out. I'll have so much money in this truck I won't be able to afford gas!!

Cheers,
