Took the aluminum wheels off and went back to steelies and the original small hubcaps,I need to get the Y block back in as I think it now needs the 4 speed I have laying around in the garage.http://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/49203eb9-fa6d-4b22-919e-8c5c.jpghttp://forums.y-blocksforever.com/uploads/images/96b02388-9b89-4403-ae50-13fb.jpg

I agree with you. The alum rims do not look correct on the car. I like to see steelies painted to match the car. You car looks great! - Bob

The steels look ok, but with the car being a Fairlane (top of the line) I think I would prefer the full hubcaps. The small hubcaps are not called poverty hubcaps for nothing.

Personally like the factory full wheel covers and wide whitewalls.

It was ordered with those hubcaps and that is how I remembered the car when I was a kid so they needed to go back on,I think when my dad ordered it he scrimped on a few things so he could get the 4 bbl motor like the full hubcaps and back up lights and no other accessories other then the fresh air heater and radio and white wall tires. If I remember correctly if one wanted the 4 bbl motor a automatic trans had to be ordered and if I was the one who ordered it I would had gotten the 3 speed o/d trans and had the dealer get everything to convert to a 4 bbl and definately would have not spent 87 dollars for that AM radio or 27 dollars for white wall tires.

A lot of the early 55 Fairlanes came with the small caps, you can see them in the magazine ads for the 55 Ford. I ran my 56 Crown with small caps and trim rings. FYI only the 55s had the center ring of the cap painted red, 56 and the replacement caps had the ring painted white.

I think I have literature with a convertible that has the small caps but with whitewalls, well its not going to get them and will be easy to clean from now on. I am getting more lazy the older I get and will not miss polishing those aluminum wheels. Time to start building the 292 and finding clutch parts as the more I think about it I like the idea of a 4 speed.

Looks good. I have to agree on the wide whites but, it still looks good.

I like the fact you're doing it like you remember your Dad had it. Priceless.

Now, if I ever find a 54 Capri, dark green over light green, green leather interior, like my Dad had in 55, I'll sell the kids to go back.

My dad also had some late 50s aftermarket lancer hubcaps on it too which I still have hanging in the basement that would look much better on a custom then how it is now, those hubcaps need to be restored since they did not hold up too well being used during Ohio winters and might get to them if I can find a appropriate car to put them on.

use  westleys bleachwhite on the white walls. it is sold under a new name now , but has the same formula. it is now called Black Magic Bleche-wite. the bottle I have is 32 oz.. use this when ever you wash the car, or just use a couple of rags and a small scrub brush like you use on your hands ( nylon bristle). I find it takes about 2 min max per tire, and you will have the whitest whites in town.   I do not know how well this stuff works on used tires that have not been properly cared for , but I use it on my '51 Mer, and my Harley that have white walls, and have used it on them since they were new.-----Jim

I used to use the bleechy white but someone somewhere told to that it dries out the white wall  and to use simple green instead. I've been using simple green for a couple of years now and it really works nice....just wet the tire, spray on simple green, scrub with brush and rinse....they look good and doesn't dry out the white walls....just for what ever it worth.l

I have used simple green , and yes it works very well, I also have used Castrol super cleaner  ( the purple stuff ) and it also works very well. I never have had a problem with the white walls on my Merc. , and I have been using the bleche-white for about 10 years now. I may have to replace the tires, just because of the age, but the white wall and the tread is still good . I have owned the Merc. since '94, and used the bleche-white on the old bias -ply tires without any problems there either. Just my experiences, and I am by no means any type of expert. this is just what has worked for me.---Jim
