Just got my Edelbrock 573 and had questions about carburators. I was looking at Holley 94's vs Stromburg 97's but wanted to know what the letters associated with the 94's mean. I have seen them listed on EB with descriptions like 59 or EAB or 8AB. Can anybody tell me what they mean? Thanks

8BA refers to the distributor used from 1948-1954. The 94 refers to a true model 94 carb in that it has a venturi diameter of .094. The other letters are casting numbers. It would be advisable to get 3 the same number . The casting numbers/letters also signify that the vacuum port is on lower left side of bowl. Thats all I know. I have 3 model 94s with number 2100 . These were used to replace the older carbs and used until the late 60s early 70s. Hope this helps

The different numbers on the 94's relate to years they were used. There were 8BA's (1949-51). The EAB's were 52 and 53 if I remember correctly. I think the 54's and 55's were EBU or something like that. The 56's, the last year for the 94 style in cars (not sure they would qualify as 94's as the venturi size was bigger) were ECG5 (manual choke) and ECG6(automatic choke) The ECG6 had a bigger size air horn and larger throttle bores, they may also be referred to as 2110's. The earlier 94's were 2100's (1954/55???) I believe.
There are earlier 94's, but I am not sure of the number designations by year.
I have an ECG6 converted to manual choke for the middle carb on my set up. The end carbs are 8BA's. I wanted to have a little bigger carb for my main carb.
You should run a progressive set up with a 3 x 2 in my opinion. You can also used 2GC's with a three to four hole adapter. Not sure if there is a spacing problem with these.
97's are decent carbs, but older technology. However, there is a certain cache' (wow) factor with the 97's, but you pay dearly for this as the 97's are EXPENSIVE. Ditto for the new repo's.

Got another qestion. Is there any reason why I can't use the older carbs. ie 3 8BA's? Thanks

You could. But, the newer carbs have the bugs worked out of them. Better jets and size, venturis,power valves , etc. Any one you choose will be killer looking. Just make sure you get a good rebuild on them.
