Transmission Question -- What is it?

I have an automatic transmission that my son took from a '67 or '68 F100.  It was behind either a 351M or 400M.  I'm pretty sure the engine was replaced in the truck and the guy my son got it from said he thought the transmission was from the same car the engine came from.  It looks like an FMX, has the same bolt pattern to the bellhousing as an FMX that I have, but the tailshaft is about 3 1/2" longer than the FMX.  The torque converter has a notch cut into each side of the snout that goes into the pump instead of flats.  There is no tag to get any numbers from, but the case has D8ZP-7006-AA.  It looks like an FMX with a long tailshaft.  Could it be a cruise-o-matic?  If so, would it be a 3 speed?

The D8ZP means it is at least a 1978 model transmission.It is almost surely a C6.I don't believe Ford ever used any other automatics behind 351M or 400 engines.

Thanks Paul.  That's what I thought too, but the case is cast iron and looks exactly like the case on an FMX that I have.  The only differences are the tailshaft and the slots for pump drive.  I took it up to DACCO to try and get a converter (thinking it was an FMX) and they say that all their FMX converters have slots on the snout side to drive the pump.  We tried a cruise o matic converter and it looks like it would work..  What's got me buffaloed is the D8 casting number.  The fellow my son got it from said he had it rebuilt not long ago and that it shifted good, so.............maybe I'll try it and see what it does, whatever it is.  (I know it's a heavy rascal)

I should have said all DACCO converters have flats on the snout.  Guess my brain's not in gear.

Butch:

Sounds to me like you have a FMX with a FOM/COM front pump.  It's a bolt on, and allows you to use an early converter with the FMX.

Thanks John.  The long tailshaft was confusing me too.  I've never seen a FMX with a long tailshaft.  All I've seen have been short.  I think I'll use it and see how it does.

Crippled Eagle:  Wouldn't the C5 have an aluminum case?  Butch's trans has a cast iron case.

Butch:  I have seen FMXs from Galaxies with longer tail housings than typically found on Fairlane/Mustang type cars.  Also, the tail housing and shaft from virtually any FOM/COM can be bolted to an FMX.  '57 Mercs had a tail housing even longer than Fords of that era.
