I need to know the gear ratio for a 9" rear end from 1957 Ford Fairlane 500, and with this rear end will it help the fuel consumption in my 1956 Ford Fairlane Victoria with a 312 y-block engine with Ford-o-matic 2 speed transmission with edelbrock 1404 cfm 500 carb?

There should be a tag on the center section bolts, if not then the most accurate way is a tooth count. What's your gearing now?

Which distributor are you using with the Edelbrock 500?

I think the ratio depends on the transmission used and possibly a few other factors.  What the car should have won't mean a whole lot because we are talking about a car that is 60 years old and quite possibly will not have the original gears.  The second best way to know what you are getting is to get the info off of the tag, which will be on one of the center section studs.  If it looks like the tag and center section have not been tampered with, then there is a good chance that it is what the tag indicates.  However, the tag can be reinstalled for an authentic look while the insides are different.  So the best way is to either count the number of axle rotations vs pinion rotations or to actually pull the center section and count the teeth.

In order  to get an idea if it will help with fuel consumption, you will also need to know the ratio currently installed in your '56.  As long as the new ratio is a smaller number than the old, then there is a good chance it will help with fuel consumption.

Most cars with an automatic and a V8 will have 3.10

If your present rear gears are stock for that car, just changing the rear axle to improve mileage isn't likely to make any real improvemnt. However, Charlie's question about the distributor is relevant. If your distributor is a 1956 load-o-matic, vacuum advance only distributor, it does not match up with an Edelbrock carb, or any other 1957 & up carb either & will effect drivability & mileage..   And just for the record if your Fordomatic is an original, it's a 3 speed...

A stick shift would normaly have a 3.56 gear. Over drive a 3.89 or possibly a 4.10. The only sure way is to count the teeth or do the revolution check if it is still in the car.

I can't help you with the mileage estimate, but I put a stock 57 rear from a station wagon into our 56 Ranch Wagon and it has a 3.56:1 gear ratio. I am assuming a lower gear ratio for the wagons over the passenger cars due to the weight difference. Also, have you already done the rear end swap or is this a project that needs to be done? If it hasn't been done yet, it is not quite a straight-up "drop-in".

Putting 57 rear in your 56 is a lot of work for very little if any reward. A stock 56 automatic rear gear in a 56 is 3.22 a stock 57 is 3.10 that would work out to about a 3 % reduction in RPM.
