marine style timing cover

  In the July-Aug Y-Block mag., John Mummert mentions a new timing cover; a thinner, aluminum, marine style cover. Does anyone know if these are out yet? Cost?     Barry

The Marine style cover was found on the Interceptor boat motors of the 50's and 60's. They pop up on EBAY occasionaly and are not especially rare. I have one but its been damaged by corrosion. You have to use the Aluminum Interceptor pan with the front cover. Chuck

Chuck.  I believe Barry is alluding to the new design 'short' cover and rear sump oil pan that's being developed to make the Y an easier swap in those early vehicles that have been accustomed to getting scrub engines.  This new cover is suppose to use the standard Y water pump but allow the use of aftermarket dampers which have typically set too far out on the passenger car applications for proper belt alignment.  I don't have any other details on this new combination but I'm assuming it will likely use the same oil pan gasket as the marine version.

Maybe Frank can chime in if He's got some more details on this.

        Mummert's doing all the pattern work on this, I understand it will use a standard config. water pump. Also will use a shorter oil pan. I'm honestly not sure if he's going to shorten a steel pan by welding or make a new cast aluminum pan. I do know he's discovering that patternmaking is not quite as easy as it looks!
