Apache:

No, T-Bird and passenger mounts are nowhere near the same.  I bought my mounts at the local auto parts store.

Mac's has them, but like John said, try NAPA or whatever local parts store you have. They may not have them in stock, but might be able to get them from there whse.

You have to be careful buying mounts that are not in their original box.  6 cylinder mounts look the same as V8, and the bolt holes fit, but they shift the engine forward or back (sorry, old-timers disease, can't remember which way) and cause clearance problems.

Two questions. Does the U on the V8 motor mount face front or back? (I know this but CRS got it). I've noticed a slight offset in changing the direction. Also, how much does the engine move back/forward with the 6cyl mounts?
I'm putting in an AOD and need to make new tranny mount and driveshaft anyway. Would like to more the engine back a few inches if possible. The adapter gives me 2"-3" to play with and the AOD is shorter than the FOM. Chuck in NH

Chuck:

Move the engine back a few inches??  The distributor on a '56 is almost against the firewall to start with.  The 6 cyl mounts only change it an inch or less.

How about the facing of the current mounts? Open to the front or back? I've had the engine appart so long I forgot.

I don't have a lot of firewall clearance but I've already moved the radiator forward in the mount and only have about 1" space to the fan. I was getting ready to move the radiator further forward when I saw this post. Made me wonder about those 6cyl mounts. Maybe I already have that problem?Wink Chuck in NH

The open side of the mounts go to the rear.

Chuck,   are you using a ford or gm  overdrive trans,  .......i assume  automatic.....Sam
By MoonShadow - 17 Years Ago
I'm using the Ford Mustang type AOD with a Bendtsen adapter. Pretty clean setup. Havn't got the engine in yet so I don't know what the trans mount or driveshaft will require. Chuck in NH

PS: John, Thanks for the motor mount info! I had purely forgotten! Chuck

chuck,   reckon i cant be of much help....I used the 700r trans.  ...had to shorten  the little cross member and weld back together,  also used the Benlten *( sp)   trans adapter.......they use some steel dont  they!      also had to change the gear ratio in the rear............Luck    Sam

It looks like the aod is going to be a couple of inches shorter than the FOM. But the tranny mount is forward even more. I'll have to make up a mount for that I guess. First I need to hand the engine and do some measuring. Chuck in NH
