152 teeth in ring gear

Remember something about using a 57 flywheel/ring gear as they were stronger.

I know it isnt what you asked, but also make sure you use the later style (1957) flex plate.  It is a 1 piece design that is much better than the 1956 version that has the rivited mounting "ears".  You can get them for about $60 or so from Tee-Bird prods, etc.  I wish I would have known when I put my car togehter; the rapping sound drove me nuts, and i had to tear a lot of stuff apart to change it.... all because I didnt want to spend the $60 when I had it all apart the first time.... lesson learned!

oldmixs and rgrove: thank you very much for your reply.  What I have is an air-cooled aluminum fin torque converter, bolted to a steel ring gear.  i was told 56-55 air-cooled, not radiator cooled has 148 teeth and is 15" in diam.  has ford logo on aluminum torque converter.  trying to figure out what this is since i'm going to be selling 312 y-block and t-bird parts.

Well, I think from what you are saying is…Yes it is a 55/56 air cooled flywheel/converter for that application. Don't know what number teeth it is supposed to have, but it was used in all of 55 and only for awhile in 56 when they changed over to the watercooled version, like the 57. A little harder to find those parts you have if one needs them I think, but someone else can jump in here too.

All the Ford "Y" block engines used the same starter/flywheel ring gear combination which according to the manual is 152 teeth.

Does your engine have a Ford starter that meshs properly with the ring gear?

It should not be any different if it is an air cooled transmission.

Now I"ve been looking for a good 312 for awhile now so whatcha selling?
