Some guy on another website emailed me about my bad box on my 1955 Ford Customline. He said that all 1949-1956 Ford cars were the same and could use any of them from these years (said..the '56 was a shorter shaft with a deep dish wheel). He said...they were Gemmer rack and sector boxes.  Claims they were pretty tough/troublesome boxes unless someone overtightened the adjustment screw.

What do you think????? All input appreciated!!!!

Ron:did you mean to say they were fairly trouble free unless the adjustment screw was over tightened?  Anyway, years ago my 55 developed a flat spot in the steering & unfortunately my 57 has the same problem. I'm assuming that there isn't some other thing in the steering setup that could cause the obvious tight or high spot in the steering. Maybe there is ??

Yes..........I meant to say troublefree. Trying to decide whether to have this box rebuilt or change to R&P. Thanks............Ron

Unless you're considering putting a whole front clip under your cars front end to properly accomodate a R&P, I'd opt for keeping the original suspension with a similar style steering box that's currently on the car.  The problem with retrofitting a R&P with the original suspension is the front sump oil pan on the Y which leaves only the area behind the engine crossmember to work with which in turn makes the turndown from the steering shaft to the rack too tight an angle to work smoothly.

I am told that the '56 boxes are internally superior to the '55 models but you'll have to work around the shorter steering shaft if you went this way.  I do know of someone local with a '55 Sunliner that's put a '56 box on his car with the improvement in boxes in mind but I haven't paid enough attention to what He did with the difference in lengths with steering shafts.

Jim Culver is currently putting a later model Cougar steering box on his '56 Club Sedan but is having to fabricate a 'new' pitman arm to work with the existing steering links.

I've been driving 56 fords with the original steering boxes since 1965, and by keeping them lubed have had no significant prbblems.  If I had problems it was from previous owners neglect on letting them run dry or inproper adjustments.  So my opinion is the 56 steering boxes are very good units.

Thanks for all the input. But............to answer my observation from another website............Do all 1949-1956 boxes interchange without any modification?  I know the '56 has a shorter rod for the deep dish steering wheel.

Thanks again............Ron

I believe there is a difference in the ratios between 55 & 56, the 56 being 3 tooth sector shaft and most 55s I believe being 2 tooth.  It's been a long time since worked on them but I remember the 55 being a little harder to steer and the steering being a little quicker.  Ted and John will probably have the best answers on this subject.

The next question is, are the necessary parts available from anyone to rebuild 55-56 & 57 steering boxes. When I talked to a local shop here in the N. West that does steering work, he seemed vague as to whether worm & sector parts & so on were available.
