I have the heads off of a 292 that will be stored for some time. I have applied Marvel Mystery oil and the cylinder walls look good except for there is a spot at the top of one cylinder with a small bit of rust. My intention is to put the heads back on for storage.

Should the rust be treated with ospho or another converter; or?
Should water jackets be filled with an antifreeze solution as a rust inhibitor?
Any other preventative measures?

Depends a lot on where you store it, in a climate controlled environment or not. Since the heads are off you can invert the block and drain any remaining coolant. You might treat the cylinder rust with a rust converter, dry it well then srray the machined surfaces well with WD-40 and let it dry. I assume it will go to a machine shop eventually. Boring/honing should take care of the rust issue.

Brent.  Consider checking this web site, www.GIBBSBRAND.com.  Someone on our Forum recommended this stuff, I read about it, bought a case of it, and have used it for multiple purposes with great results.  I've used it extensively to preserve tanked or shot blasted engine blocks and heads.  I've given cans to friends to try.  They buy it now, too! I've never had anything work as well as this stuff for any of the things I've used it for doing.

IF anyone on our Forum has not been pleased with what this stuff does, please chime in!   Smile

I've only seen this product on eBay.  The prices are all over the place. Don't buy it from the first supplier that you see has an advertisement for it.

Hope this helps someone.   Smile

the suggestion to put  some anti freeze in the block is good, re cylindrs lots of engine oil on cyl walls, plus if you are in north west
turn the crank 1/2 turn every month and re oil cylenders. in the wet west coast heads ar a big threat ford ys are bad for valve rusting and stick . get some 5gal pails and put 1 head in each and fill with use oil. my suggestions  only valid west coastBC surrey
