I am putting in an Audiovox CCS-100 cruise control in my 56 Bird. The first thing throws me - the setting of the dip switches in the servo unit.

The first two switches are set according to the Pulse Per Mile (PPM) for vehicles equipped with a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Well, the Birds do not have this as they came before all these electric speedos. The instructions do not say what to set the switches in this case. Any one ever install one of these units and if so how did you set these switches. No telephone number or hot line is shown in any of the literature.

Thanks for any help.

paul, You might try on line, google audiovox and see what you can find. Second thought, some of the cars like 5.0 Mustangs used a signal generator in the cable location. Gear driven from the same location as the cable was. You'd have to change your speedo to an electric type though.

Hey Paul,

Was wondering how much research was done before deciding on Audiovox unit?

My driving has been severely limited as of late due to cramping in my Rt. hip (due to/associated with back injury). As a result, have been considering aftermarket cruise-control (powered by 6V/pos. grd. converter?) but was a bit leery re: feasibility?

So, will be following your progress with much interest!

It looks like a magnet kit is required. The instructions seem to imply that the coil (Tachometer) is all that is necessary to function. Maybe all features of the cruise control will not be available without vss or magnets.

The last time I installed after market cruise control was in the mid 80s on an old Bronco.  It was Audiovox and the kit came with magnets that I had to wire 180 deg apart on the drive shaft.  Then I had to mount a sensor close by to pickup the pulses.  It all had to be adjusted with a feeler gauge.  I think that's what you'll need.

Ditto what A.J. said.I put one on a 73 F-100 back in the 80's.It worked great.

Hey Paul;;  You can get a signal generator that will give you the speed without the magnets.  Was an audivox distributor before I retired.  Pull up Rostra cruise controls, they make the audivox units.  The one I am putting in my Bird has fittings to thread into the back of the speed-o. then connect to the cruise unit.rostra Part number 250-4160  adaptor pkg.  Hope this helps??  God Bless

Thanks everybody - will look into the rostra unit, otherwise I will have to use the magnets. I also found out on the dip switches.
