I observed a trans today in a guys garage that I could get, I can't remember the year he thought it was but from the numbers (D7) sounds like it could be 77, he thought it was a 3 speed with overdrive from a 79 truck???, it is a top loader.

Here are the numbers: Case, D7DR - 7006 - AA (or may be 7008, it was dirty and hard to tell)

it has a tag on it which reads: RUG CO EJ2

                                          D8TR MA 0052

The tail reads: RF - D7DR - 74040 - AA

Can any one tell me exactly what this is and would it be a good option for a Y

It will work, sounds like a 6 cyl OD unit to me. You will need to use an 1 1/8 -10 disc and either reduce the size of the front bearing retainer or increase the hole size in the bell. I believe you'll have to grind some material from the pilot bearing length also. Match it to an early Y block transmission.

      These also require a specific shifter, standard top loader shifters will need to be modified. They actually shift 1,2,4,3. w00tThird gear is the overdrive gear.

I have done it to a T10 before so it sounds like the similar deal. Do the ears mate up to a Y bell? I know some you have to redrill and tap the bell dont you?

Bill,

       Forgot that, you have to drill the ears to match the bell! I put them together on the bench, aligned them, center punched one,  drilled one hole then, bolted it together and did the rest to prevent errors! Really not as hard as it sounds, although a new drill bit was a big help. You only have to drill the top ears. It was easier to drill the transmission ears than drill and tap the bell by hand.
