Rosie

i've done this in a 56 truck,i believe there is a detailed write up on this website from a Mr Hallam in a car.

he is very helpful. it was a very straight foreward conversion. the kit is actually from a company called "FLAT-O-MATIC"

I had 3 minor problems 1-- the truck uses ears on the bell housing that had to be reamed from 1/2" to 9/16"

2--studs on TCI converter would not fit holes in flex plate ,i touched the flex plate with a die grinder but check first its a bit of a bear to spot from underneath the truck and on your back!

3--the dust cover for the converter has a captive nut on one side, the corresponding hole in the bell housing was also threaded. i have temporarily left the bolt out.

you will also need an FE starter i think.

good luck stu

Hey Rosie;  I'm using the Flat-o-matic kit, works great.  You will need the FE starter , but flat supplies a special drive, easy to change-- really spins it good.  Suggestion for installing the starter-- put a stud in the upper mounting hole, then you can hang the starter on the stud and thread the bottom mount much easier, than holding the heavy starter while trying to get the bolts started.  Hope this helps.  Good Luck     God Bless

Thanks guys I should have told you its to be fitted to 57 Fairlane 500. I will check out Flat-o

Cheers

I did the Flat-o-matic conversion to my 56 Vicky several years ago with no problems. The starter used is from a 1973 390 and spins her over real good. The above suggestion concerning the stud will save some time and effort.

Gene at Flat-o ( www.flat-o.com ) can supply you with a speedo cable to mach the C-4 to your stock speedo also.

You know, you might also consider an AOD too. With gas what it is an AOD would give you pretty good cruising RPM with the higher ratio over drive.

This is my 292 with the (similar) E4OD attached that's going into my 55 F-600 (might be a little big for a Fairlane thoughBigGrin)

I just put an older version AOD (non electric) in my 56 Victoria. The driveshaft should be back tomorrow. So I can't tell you how it works yet. Conversion was simple enough. I made a new rear mount with 3" wide flat plate, welded a 1.5" piece of box tubing to mate with the original Mustang tranny mount. Drilled through the box to fit the tranny bolts then drilled the underside hole to 3/4" so I could get a socket in to tighten the bolts. Bolts up from under the frame with 3 bolts on each side. Looks almost factory and works great. Chuck in NH

Chuck,

how did you do your engine mounts? I'm assuming you used your original side-type mounts? I'll be adding a "tailshaft" type mount too.

That E4OD weighs a "ton" with the parking brake assy on the back!

I am going to have to build new mounts and just eliminate the original truck (front & bellhousing) mounts I guess...

The engine is all Y-block so the side mounts were no problem. The AOD was a little longer to the tranny mount. In fact the AOD pan would have been on top of the stock mount. So I had to move it back about 6". I used the Bendtsens adapter and high torque starter. Tranny bolted up to the engine just like it should. Seems like a good setup to me. I am running a Lokar TV cable for the shifting and the Lokar column shift rod kit. I havn't fine tuned the shift locations but I do seem to have park and all the rest. I'll let you know when its under power. Chuck in NH

Chuck,

You'll love the AOD. Just make absolutely positively sure you get the cable to the carb correctly adjusted! Also don't use full throttle on the upshift to OD. You'll burn the box up with the lockup clutch. I have one in the Ranger (11.90's @ 114-116 mph.)Tongue

Frank, I figure once its on the ground running I'll trailer it to a local tranny shop and have the pressure set by them. I'm using the Lokar TV cable and there dosen't seem to be a thumbnail adjustment for it. I understand they will burn up quickly if not correct. Didn't know about soft pedaling the overdrive shift. I put a transgo shift kit in it while it was out. We'll see how it does. Chuck in NH
