AOD Trans cooler

Wondering if the 56 radiator transmission cooler is enough to take care of the AOD trans? Thanks Gerry

if you took that tube out of the radiator and looked at it you would be surprised at how small it is - I wasn't convinced until a guy at a local radiator shop showed me. He advised to go with a add on cooler and I did and didn't go thru the rad at all since the 55 doesn't have it. Guy at the local trans supply said the cooler I bought would take care of it all.

Also you have to remember if you do use the radiator, you are putting trans heat into the engine coolant.

Just some thoughts. You should talk Bendstens or Raptor Transmissions to get some real advice on YOUR particular app.

Your AOD will probably be fine if you're not doing any towing. Also, if you have the locking torque converter your trans will not develop a lot of heat when you're "locked". (the torque converter generates a LOT of (actually most of the) trans heat when it's "slipping")



In fact the engine will help heat up the trans when you drive it in cold weather. I am going to use a BIG Hayden cooler with it's own fan on my E4OD in the 55 F-600 and I'll probably have a thermostat controlled fan too but Mine is a truck application that WILL be doing some hauling/towing. I am also toying with the idea of using a marine oil cooler that is a multi pass type that will use engine coolant too warm the trans fluid in cold weather (sort of like the one in your radiator) Some electronic transmissions like to be at a certain temp before they will allow the TC to lock.



In really cold weather it takes quite a while for my Suburban 4L80E TC to lock up......If I'm towing the boat it warms up pretty fast.





If you're worried about it try a gage and see exactly what it does.



(are you using a Y-block and Bendtsen adapter?)

Thanks for the reply I will probably try it like it is, using the stock radiator.

 No no adaptor. I have 2 y  block cars and am going with a 50 ho with AOD in a station wagon. The y block  got tired. Thanks for the input.  Gerry
