SmileI got my 1955 ford 272 engine running fine but after I shut it off and let it set I have to hold the accelerator to the flor in order to start it, the carburetor
leaks down. It has been rebuilt also, any ideas why? thanks

Some of the rebuild kits these days are coming with incorrect power valves that leak like the dickens - sounds like that's your trouble - what kit did you use? I used one from Car Quest and had that same trouble.

Tim: It would be helpful for the carb "Gurus", ( I'm not one of them) if you indicated what carb you have?

Tim.  Assuming this is the original 3 bolt carb, it’s possibly leaking around the power valve.  Could be just loose or the gasket not seated squarely causing fuel to leak by it.  Or could simply be defective or damaged and will just need to be replaced.

SmileI bought it from Napa and I ordered another power valve from them and the same thing

Smileit is the 3 bolt carburetor and I checked the gasket and it is fine so where can i get a good power valve thanks

Timmy:

If you just got it from NAPA, maybe you should take it back and have them replace it.  It may have some kind of injury that wasn't noticed when it was rebuilt.

Look up Dennis Carpenter or TeeBird products - they will have the right power valve, but you may have to pay more. Fortunately for me, my old power valve was good enough to do the trick...

SmileThanks for the help every one. I called t bird and they did not sell just a power valve so I called napa again and he is going to order me one. He said the gasket does not come with it and you can't order a gasket separate. Maybe I can use a oil pan plug gasket?
By Ted - 17 Years Ago
Unless you can test the power valve, I’d recommend changing out the power valve as well as the gasket.  Oil pan gasket is likely not a good choice.  The gasket for the power valve does need to match the power valve itself as there are some different designs of power valves out there and subsequently different gasket designs to go with each.

SmileI got a new power valve and it came with a gasket so I put a little grease to hold the gasket in place on the power valve so it would not shift when i tighten it and i carefully tightened it but the car still takes about 6 seconds to start after i shut it off and let it sit for 5 minutes

How does it start when cold and allowed to sit for at least a day?  A weak ignition can also give a similar starting issue.
By timmy4 - 17 Years Ago
SmileIt starts within 4 seconds when it is left to sit a day. The spark is good.

Assuming the power valve is okay now, too high a float level is another area in which to look.  From what you’ve described, still sounds like light flooding or fuel dribble when you shut off the engine.

SmileJohn on the carburetor it says ford. It fits on 3 studs on the intake.
