I am looking at an engine and I cannot find the ID info for the heads. So, to be stupid wher is the information ? I have looked at the places I know of but cant see them. Engine was in a 1960 dumptruck. It is an automatic with 2bbl carb. Thanks

Normally the casting marks are under the water inlet on the head where the intake manifold bolts on.  The short front bolt for the Intake manifold threads into the boss with the marking on the bottom.  A small mirror may help you see them.

An engine from a commercial vehicle may have been rebuilt a number of times or could easily be a replacement.  Such an engine may have any of the heads on it.  Check John Mummerts web site Ford-y-block.com to see what they are.  There is a link someplace on the home page.

Thats where I looked. These heads dont have any casting numbers on them at all. That being said what can I do to know what these heads are?

There are four different places to look for the head part numbers that I’m aware of for the various years.

1. Under the water ports where the intake manifold bolts up.

2. Exhaust port side of the heads.

3. In the valve spring area under the valve covers.

4. On the deck side of the heads.

Another option for cylinder head identification is to measure the combustion chambers and the intake valve size.  Are there freeze plugs or core plugs in the ends of the heads?  That would be another clue to watch out for.
