It may sound odd, but a buddy of mine is considering putting a Y block in a fox body mustang that he has been setting up for an 1/8th mile run. I seem to remember that this was in either the Y block mag or on this site. Anybody remember? and has this ever been done before?

Daniel: Ted Cain from TN started building one a few years ago, but I don't think it was ever completed. John in Selma, IN

Y-Guys There was mention of this combination,at Columbus, but I can't mention the short, cigar smoking, builder. It should be finished this spring I think. (That would open some eyes!!) Bill

OK guys I'm going to let the cat out of the bag. After looking for a couple of years for a decent 57 Custom to make into a drag car, I gave up. I have bought a 67 Falcon and a 66 parts car. Plans are old school southern style Match Bash gasser. I set a mockup motor and C4 in it a couple weeks ago. A Y Block will fit, but the shock towers will have to be trimed if using stock exhaust manifolds. No problem for me as I have a straght axle ordered and will be cutting the shock towers out. I have an econoline axle that I had planed on using, but it is five inch's to wide. It could be cut down, but I opt'ed to order a tube axle and use the econoline spindles. The drive train will be, 292 block, C4 trans, 57 rearend housing. I have talked to Ted about one of his stroker kits and it looks like we will wind up with 314 C I with around 12/1 compression. I have talked to Mummert about one of his new intakes when he gets them machined. I am working on the chassis and body right now, lots of alum, lexan, and fiberglass. I am shooting for 2800 lbs. I hope to have it ready for test and tune when the local track opens back up in the spring and good lord willing, see you in Columbus 09.

Don't know if it will run with Jerry and not sure if I want too run that fast! It"s been forty years since I went down a drag strip and that was in a 55 scrub with a warmed over 283 with a 3 speed. If I can get it in the 12's, I'll be happy.

Glen, do you remember your times you ran in the scrub?

No I don't remember, I'm sure that it was in the sixteens or seventeens, but the timing systems back were not much to speak of. The tower operator told you what you ran over the PA, no timing slips, and if you were not one of the local's you didn't always get a fair shake. I had to run gas class in the 55 because I had removed the front bumper(cool thing to do back then) and I had put a pretty bumpy cam in it that I bought used from one of the local circle track boys. Didn't have a clue what grind it was, just knew that it sounded good. I never had any problems with the engine, but I was putting sincro's in the transmission every week. If you over shifted it, you would pull the front off it. I was twenty two at the time, got married the next year and parked it. A few years later we made a circle track car out of it and ran it with a 355 for several years. Moved up to a late model in the late 70's and in the early 80's after the divorce gave up on any form of racing. Didn't go back to a track of any kind until 2001. But although I want run this car on a regular basis, I sure look forward to trying my hand at it again, plus my son is working with me on it. Gives us some good time together.
