Found the 11/08 issue at a mall/chain bookstore. Y-Block article actually quite good, and surprisingly accurate/unbiased for Hot Rod Mag.



I'm a bit puzzled though, by one point:



They describe the Ross pistons as having a 1.750" "compression height" (?). Excuse my ignorance, but I'm not familiar with that term. Could someone with more knowledge explain?

I believe the dimension is the distance from the top,flat part of the piston to the center of the connecting rod pin.   Barry

Barry is right.  The term ‘compression height’ refers to the wrist pin centerline as measured from the top edge of the piston.  Piston dome heights are not included in this figure.  Taking the compression height, the length of the rod, the amount that the piston sits in the hole or below the deck, and adding to these half of the crankshaft stroke will give you the deck height of the block.
